Cool Kids and the new SS Camaro

I've been reading a few threads about very young kids getting a new Camaro. There seems to be a lot of us old timers criticizing these youngsters for getting a muscle car. I for one am happy that these kids can enjoy such a priveledge. Here's why:

When we were in high school, we built up our cars and they were very fast. Drum brakes, no shoulder belts (some didn't even have lap belts), unsafe modifications, limited safety restrictions, lousy roads... the list goes on but I think you get my drift. Some of our friends got hurt and killed in these cars.

The new Camaro is a heck of a lot safer than some of the monsters we used to "drive" (I should say hot rod). I say let the next generation of hot rodders have a Camaro and encourage them to learn how to be safer than we were in high school.

IMHO

I wouldn't mind my kid driving an automatic V6 Camaro..However I would not...never...buy my kid an SS... That is looking for trouble, no matter how safe the car is..

Just after high school I bought an 87 Trans Am. 305 LG4 (all of 155 HP). I nearly killed myself many times in that car, throw another 271 HP on top of that and I DEFINITELY would have killed myself. However I did learn a whole lot about how to drive a rear drive car in the snow, how to build and fix stuff, wire stuff etc on that car, etc. Its an experience....

it's not that they have them, I especially love the little jr gearheads who save up and earn them, it's the spoiled brat yuppie kids who's parents throw money at them and believe this makes them a good Parent.

To you youngsters who are earning and adoring your new Camaro's my hats off you deserve something fun and cool!

Heck back when I was in H.S. I had a 1992 Z/28 and a 1994 Z/28 I was responsible never had a ticket or any accidents I see no reason why teens should have enjoy the same privilege as I did. Our Student parking lot was full of Vetts, BMW’s, Porsche’s, A few Benz’s, and a few vipers. I really do not see why it bothers anyone when they see a 16 or 17 year old having a SS who the hell cares.

I would NEVER buy my kid, male or female, a car that makes 250 hp or more. NEVER. The problem is this: The frontal lobe of the brain is NOT developed. This crucial part of the brain allows people to think about consequences before acting. Most people don't acquire this ability until they are into their late 20's and on. Teenagers are constantly making stupid, boneheaded decisions (like we all did) like having unprotected sex w/o using birthcontrol, doing drugs, stealing, etc.) You really want to hand one of them a 300hp+ car? It's very irresponsible for a parent to do this. Read this article: http://www.actforyouth.net/documents...olbraindev.pdf

Obviously those kids' parents don't care. The only thing they care about is whether little Johnny keeps up with the Jones'.
