Was the old Mobile 1 better

Hey I found an old jug of 5W30 Mobile 1. Probably about 3 years old and when I compared the rear of the jug to the newer jug, the old jug says pours down to -47 degrees. The newer just says pours down to -36 degrees.

Was the old oil better?

I attached a pic of each rear of the bottles.

What do you guys think?

Nope but I live up in canada and start it every now and then to move it around. I noticed the rating was SM on the older oil and SN on the newer stuff. I think the older oil has more zinc for protection, but I can't figure out why it pours soo much better at low temps. They are both Mobile 1 5W30.

Yes GL4 was better that GL5 oil for a whole host of reasons.

I do NOT use Mobil 1 any longer for a number or specific reasons.

It was my understanding that Mobil 1 used to be a PAO Group IV oil and then went to a Group III Hydrocracked oil. Upset a ton of people when they found out since they were still paying a high price for a lesser oil.

But now from what I have read, Mobile 1 is back to a PAO Group IV oil. I need to dig up the source.

Oils are all getting worse. With all the EPA crap, the need for more miles, less pollutants, etc. Technology has improved some aspects of oils.....some good, some bad. Its a toss up. Pick an oil, use it and change it regularly. Best kept secret ever! LOL

When the new rated mobil 1 oil came out many failures of cams, and worst case engine. The horror stories were countless. They lowered thr zinc and phos in the oil.

Cams have failed with Joe Gibbs Ls30 oil etc..as well....Comp cams just admitted in an email it was a manufacuture defect, not because of some specfic oil....

Have Proof of One cam and/or engine failure directly linked to "the countless horror stories" of Mobil 1?

I figured the old stuff was better as it poured at a lower temp. Even for guys that do not drive in winter I think its better. Some research I have done indicates, as Andy-AMSOIL in post #8 says that zinc and phos were lowered in the new oil.

The lower pour point indicates a different formulation of base oils. GF-5 is supposed to be better than GF-4 but both are still very fuel economy biased. It carries the Dexos rating, which means something I suppose. Personally I think an HTHS (film strength) of 3.0 is too low for the LS3 or LSA for anything other than commuting use. My opinion is that it is too thin for sustained high performance driving and it goes borderline quickly with any fuel dilution. Again, just my opinion based on a few years of reviewing lots of oil analyses online as well as testing my own oil.

Keep in mind you only need zinc and other additives if the oil film breaks down. Here is the link for zinc ppm from Mobil across their product line.

WHAT YOU WANT IS , MOBIL 1 0-40 EURO FORMULA. Has much higher ZDDP. Last 5 quart jug I bought at Walmart was $26.00 . Best bang for the buck oil hands down . Now if your in a hot climate with a cammed car ,you can use Chevron Dello 15-40 and laugh all the way to the bank ,cause it is half the price .

Just do an online Google you will get many hits.

This occured when the move to GF5 rated oil's was introduced, many highperformance vehicles not only secluded to camaros.
