PIP5163A July 17, 2014. A Google search will not bring any results, you must know a GM Tech to confirm this.

Saying a catalytic converter will get sucked into your intake would mean your exhaust runs back through your engine. This is equivalent to you eating your own feces. Direct sh*t injection. You're definitely full of sh*t, IMO.

It comes up under alleged cylinder out of round. Read the entire bulletin it lists catalytic converter particle ingestion as a cause for this condition. Furthermore the manufacturer requires further investigation of the condition of the catalytic converters when replacing the engine to prevent this from happening.

Hey guys it isn't a joke, it really happens. I have been working with Terry Dyson from Dyson Analysis with our Acaida, which has the 3.6 v6 and he was concerned about this issue. I send my oil off to him for analysis.
Quoted from Dyson Analysis: "In the milliseconds before the exhaust valves can close or if they are jammed with catalytic materials or burnt carbon they will intake exhaust feed while the intake induction phase is happening, sucking in the materials and doing serious scoring and heat release damage to the cylinder. VERY common in the earlier GM 3.6 Especially when the CAT converter is integral to exhaust manifold and located close like in GM applications and many Honda types." |

One question, has anyone had this happen to their V6 Camaro on this forum????
And what do you mean by early 3.6 V6 engines, how early are they talking about???? I would believe carbon causing scoring before I would cat material. Just my honest opinion.

Yeah, I just hate the idea of my engine being ruined by a catalytic converter. Thanks for posting the research. I have no reason to post bs, I drive one of these cars daily. That is, when I'm not driving my '87, or the R1. The bulletin pertains to all 2015, and older vehicles with the high feature v6.

Early model 3.6 is back to the 07 to 09 Acaida's and other LAMDA platform vehicles with this engine. What happens is if the catalytic media cracks or degrades it will migrate past protective screening in large enough particle size and volume to damage rotating parts in cylinder. VVT, cam phasing and fuel maps that are fast and precise but not fueling at traditional times ( like when piston is fully bottomed out) contribute.
At least on our Acadia, the CAT is right there at the exhaust manifold on the front side of the engine. Remember it sits sideways in the Acadia. |

We had an 08 that wasn't direct injected, but our 2011 is. I'm not seeing issues with our UOA's on our 11 like we were on our 08 Acadia. We traded the 08 with 80 miles on it due to electrical gremlins that the dealer couldn't find.
So far our 11 is doing well with 51k miles on it, but it still beats up the oil and I can't go more than 5k miles, no matter what oil brand I use. At least we are not seeing any issues with this one in the UOA's that reflect CAT problems like we did in the 08. |
