Remove Cats To Save Your Engine

One of the guys that I work with said that the catalytic converters regularly fail on the high feature v6. On the LFX material can enter the cylinders, and score the cylinder walls. Has anyone else heard of this? Sounds like a good excuse to fix something that might not break

Uh, the cats are in the exhaust... and there's no way you can get them back into the intake....

Unless you're engine is sucking air from the exhaust, I don't see this happening....

I would be more worried about the muffler bearings rolling up into the cylinders..

It sounds better if u say u are worried the cats may break up inside and plug causing too much backpressure. With the engine not having anywhere to exhaust it could explode causing small children standing by to be injured

Good reason to tell the wife they need to be removed.

Unless your running a turbo downstream of the cats the probability is zero.

There should be a test one takes before they buy anything more "car" than a Prius.

Very funny, maybe I'll just go check my dust cups, I think they are leaking... When he told me about the converter failures, it didn't seem probable. But what do I know, I'm just a Refinishing Technician. I also have rebuilt a relatively modern fuel injected sbc 5.7L engine, and driven it for more than 1000 miles. I'll ask if there's an actual tsb.

You would have to have a failure of the exhaust valves to suck anything backwards into the engine, remember the exhaust is pressurized by the engine, the cats are downstream from the engine. If the cats were to come apart, the pieces would be forced down the exhaust not back into the engine.
