Im not on this board much I just like reading the comments but I thought I would let everyone in on this:

FREE PRESS EXCLUSIVE: Camaro to roar back by 2008

GM to announce Chevy going from concept to streets

August 6, 2006

BY TOM WALSH and MARK PHELAN
FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITERS

It's really happening: The Chevy Camaro is coming back as a production car, the Free Press has learned.
General Motors Corp. Chairman Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the resurrection of the legendary muscle car in a speech Thursday to an automotive conference in Traverse City.

The auto industry has been buzzing with speculation about GM's plans for the Camaro ever since the carmaker wowed the crowds at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January with a stunning 400-horsepower concept. At a time when truck and SUV sales are softening and car sales are regaining momentum, a sexy new entry could give GM's entire passenger-car line a boost.

The production version could be built as early as 2008 and will offer three engines, a V-6 and two V-8s, according to people familiar with the plans.
GM spokesman Steve Harris would not comment Friday on plans for the Camaro, but other sources told the Free Press that GM's top management and board of directors have green-lighted the car.

The Camaro was introduced in 1966 as the answer to the Ford Mustang, and it prowled America's streets and drag strips until production ended in 2002.
Like the concept, the production Camaro will be based on GM's new Zeta global architecture for rear-wheel-drive cars, expected to form the basis for several big, powerful sedans and coupes to be introduced over the next few years.

It was unclear last week where GM intends to build the Camaro. Speculation in the automotive press has centered on assembly plants in Oshawa, Ontario, and Wilmington, Del.

Other unanswered questions are sure to keep the buzz going even after Wagoner's announcement:

How many people will buy a Camaro in the age of $3.15-per-gallon gasoline?

What will it cost?

And what about bringing back the Pontiac Firebird/TransAm?

Sweet deal. I guess we all know it's gonna be built. However, it's not really a done deal until we hear it from GM themselves. If they announce anything this week, that'll be plenty cool for now. And to answer the columnists question regarding who would pay for a car w/ gas prices like that???...uh...I think we all would!

Well with three engine choices, how does this sound. The "RS" with the V-6; the Z-28 with the 400HP LS2; and the "SS" with the 430HP LS3. And some wonderful dealer...ahem Yenko to stuff an LS7 into it.

Sounds like something I'd like to hear. But I'd go one step further and make sure the SS engine had plenty more hp than the Z-28. Just stuff the LS7 in the SS and call it a day. That'll be the one for me!

The SS has to have more than 430, its got to compete with the GT500.

On a side note, Did anyone else see the Camaro in the GM commercial that aired during the “Go Fast Turn Left Race”? I did, it was sweet… The commercial really gets your blood pumping!

If I had to guess, I'd look for the SS to be first, arriving with more HP than the Mustang GT, followed "down the road" by the Z28, which would go head to head with the Shelby and 425HP Challenger.

car lineup

The SS will always be the top of the line production model, not withstanding special runs like the zl1 and any others, that hasn't been that frequent in camaros history. In more recent years (25 or so)the RS has just been a trim level, usually some side skirts and slight handling and performance upgrades (dual exhaust good for 5hp more or so thoug it wasen't noted on the specs) with same engine as the v6. I would love to have the option to apply the RS version(if it's any more attractive) to any higher end package like the first gen. I.E. RS/SS, RS/Z28 would love to see those badges again. Anyhow I'm sure the line up will be something like this give or take 20hp.

V6 coupe/RS 280hp
V8 z28 360
V8 SS 420

As far as Yenko/Copo it would be great to see that history revived but it's highly unlikely. Since Yenko is a dealer who just used the Copo loop whole to order high performance for his cars and trow some paint job on the car. Now for Copo Gm has gone away from having that much diversity in options, everything is in packages usually with 3 to 4 choices. So it's highly unlikely GM decides to add a zl1 or copo package (that really would not be a Copo because of the change in the process) initially I believe they will wait to see the reaction to the initial offerings. Again this is all speculation but if history can be a guide it should not be too far off. BTW Wikipedia has a very informative article on the history and it's relatively compact worth taking a look.

FWIW, the Camaro Z28 was the "top tier" Camaro.

If I was a betting man, I'll bet you'll see the Z28 return atop the Camaro lineup.
