Is it really worth porting the snout on the ZL1 ?
I have pullys,balancer,injectors,headers,rotofab,GT9 cam, auto vert.
What I would like to know is how much is the snout worth rwhp ?Being it cost anywhere from 300 to 550 to port it depending on who is doing it. If there is anyone that has just ported the snout as a add on after doing other work I would like to know the details and how much they gained, maybe it would also show the difference from shop to shop or maybe gains based on ported to size for planned throttle body size later down the road. If there is anyone that ported the snout and added a throttle body pls let us know the gains so we can see the difference in porting and going to either a 90mm or a 102mm combo thank you. yes, it is worth it. Depending on your mods, any where from 15 to 25 RWHP. I have the same engine the CTS-v and I ported my entire blower, ported snout to match my 102mm TPIS and I netted 729rwhp A6 with these mods.... "similar to yours"
Heads GT9 cam headers exhaust injectors 9.1 lower 2.55 upper injectors, hx, radiator ported blower, snout, and 102mm. So I personally think with your mods, it is for sure worth porting your snout and your blower. hope this helps! |

Cost per HP it is worth it in general, but depends on your overall HP objectives and how you plan to use the ZL1.

I think the prices out there that I have come across for snout porting are misleading. Several places are in the $550 range and some a bit higher but offer a speedy core exchange with heavy shipping and handling. In my opinion, grinding down the high spots is not really porting, or changing the surface texture is not really porting. Don't get me wrong, anything helps, just be sure you know what you are paying for.
There is more involved with the "Porting" of the snout to accommodate a 102mm throttle body, definitely a delicate operation done correctly. The opening transition gets thin in the neck area and some have made it a standard practice to add weld. Some will actually cut out the dimple to allow additional access to remove more material and then weld in a piece that actually follows the contour and ultimately increases volume (Too much trouble and risk to make sense to me.) The blower entrance needs to be matched to the back of the snout and requires more porting to transition the two. My theory is focused on the velocity and direction of the air passing through, not how much material I can remove to increase volume. Add another $80.00 to your bill if you go the 102mm route, you will need to add a spacer unless you want to butcher the housing with a grinder.

...answer is yes. Any bit of casting flash or interefernce of the air flow removed adds up in the HP plus column. If the airflow gets too smooth and it flows beyond factory calibration than you must increase the fuel supply.., and it goes on beyond that within the performance enhancement perameters since you must further upgrade your hardware. Once you start, it may not let you off the merry go round.

SORRY BUT THATS A REALLY PRETTY PICTURE,BUT MEANS JACK ,AND SHOWS NO PROVE THAT YOUR PORT WORK IS WORTH DOING OR MAKES ANY HP WORTH DOING BASED ON THE COST TO DO IT WITHOUT ANY OTHER MODIFICATIONS AT THE SAME TIME DOES IT..,AND YOUR SAYING THAT ANYONE THAT KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT AIRFLOW OR HAS DONE CONTROLLED TESTING NEEDS PRETTY PICTURES TO PROVE HOW MUCH POWER ITS WORTH,I KNOW YOUR TRYING TO SELL YOUR PORT WORK VENDOR OR NOT.SORRY JUST HAD TO SAY THAT...GOOD LUCK SELLING YOUR PRETTY WORK...

Sorry you misunderstood my post as a service offering. I don't do port work for people anyway, the picture was something to help you with your decision... whatever you decide to do. It always amazes me how much the people asking the questions seem to know. Good luck.
