The tests seem to show the automatic is faster. That's what I've read. I'm no expert.

Note: I didn't say "better" in any way. I firmly believe that is a matter of personal preference. This has been a hot topic of discussion before so beware.

Faster at what? And there have been some lengthy discussions, might want to try a search on it.

The M6 has 26 more hp at the crank, in addition to lower drivetrain losses. Automatics have up to 5% more losses that manuals, so the difference is even greater at the rear wheels. But, lacking a professional driver, the automatic is often faster in the quarter (as the previous poster stated).

Instead of saying the A6 is faster, why not say the A6 is more CONSISTENT. A very good driver can make a M6 shift very fast and precise, but even they mess up from time to time. An automatic will shift at what it determines the best spot EVERYTIME. You have to decide if the computer does indeed shift at the perfect time for YOU. If you like to shift gears, the M6 will be considerably more fun to drive. Oh, you do get that extra 26hp with the M6 as well.

With a good driver, the M6 should have the advantage. Over several races, (bracket racing) the A6 should dominate. For everyday driving, it's purely choice.

I have a 3200 stall converter in my 02 and I will be faster in a 1/4 than most stick shift cars, but the manual is more fun to drive. My 5th Gen will be a M6

The 6 Speed Manual has 26 more HP, and also gets a 3.45 rear end instead of the 3.27 in the automatic. As far as which one is faster I think I'd say they are probably pretty evenly matched, but the Automatic would produce more consistant results during timed acceleration. I bought the 6SP manual to avoid getting the active fuel management....I'll leave fuel management to my right foot instead.

What does shifting your own gears have to do with DRIVING? If anything, the autos allow you to drive your car more since you're not interupted with HAVING to shift gears. Nice try though. If you like shifting gears, it's totally fine, but don't say it's blasphemy to get one without a manual. I've had my time shifting through gears and now I don't want to anymore. That's my choice and that's what I wanted. I'm glad you like options you chose on your car.
