Are squeegees bad for glass?
Something occurred to me yesterday. We strive to keep our glass as smooth as the rest of the car. For obvious reasons, I'd never use a squeegee (or even a water blade) on my paint, so should that apply to glass as well? Granted, glass is harder than clear coat, but if a piece of debris were to get on a squeegee I'd guess it could probably still cause a scratch. Am I just being paranoid?

Your are not being paranoid as what you ask is true- a piece of debris on a squeegee could scratch the glass.

I don't use one. But I don't know what debris you would get in the squeegee after a wash that would harm the glass...
I would be more weary of the squeegee stripping away any sealant.

OK, the squeegee's gone, but sealant? Stupid question time: does glass have sealant on it, or are you talking about an aftermarket application (or both)?

Aftermarket application such as rainx or Adams glass sealant.

I imagine a squeegee is no worse than the wiper blades (that's what they are).

That's why I say that. You can always tell where the wiper blades wipe because the beading of water is different between the two areas.

I use a squeege to get the water off the windows for years and it never scrached. I also have never used the gas station squeege. Those things are bad enough to scratch diamonds.

Potentially? Sure.
Likely? Not really. It would take some pretty serious grit and a lot of force behind the squeegee for that to be an issue IMHO. I just choose not to use one b/c its just as easy to wipe the glass with a drying towel while I'm drying the rest of the car vs. carrying a squeegee just for the glass. |
