Volant CAI question

I have a volant CAI on my v6 camaro and between 1k and 2k rpms there is this annoying whistling sound... I checked all the rubber fittings for holes, made sure all clamps were secure... any ideas on how to fix this? I'm thinking maybe the filter needs to be cleaned but I was told that for this CAI you don't have to clean it...

Volant? Never heard of it. "Between 1 and 2 rpms"? You need to give it more gas!

I think you meant "between 1,000 and 2,000 rpms" (or 1K and 2K)... not 1 and 2. It idles at 500.

I would put the original air box back on and see if the noise goes away.

My k&n has a slight whistle when i hit it hard, everything is sealed. If you checked all your connections, and no engine light (vacuum leak) then you should be okay. Check seals before mass air flow sensor, if they are not sealed it would not cause a cel and a leak there is not good cause you want all air going through the filter.

If you want an easy test to see if something isn't sealed. Go to supermarket buy a pack of skewers, use one of them, light the tip on fire then blow out, have someone get the rpm up (say 3000 or more, you want to get some suction going), now move the smoking tip around the intake tube, if you have a leak you will see the smoke get sucked in the hole. Fix any leaks if there are any. I've done this many times to check for vacuum leaks.

Good luck. Also look for sharp edges in the air path, file them down if there are any, had one intake whistle bad because of a rough edge in the tube.

may be a dumb response, but did you use the new gasket for the Mass air flow sensor?

+1 Had on for 5 yrs. never a problem.

I know you said the clamps were tight. Is the filter pushed on all the way tight & the clamp tight? Make sure the air flow tube is pushed up tight against the TB all the way around same on the other end tight against the air box.

I Have a Volant. One thing I noticed when installing it, and this just may have been a bad part that they fixed later, is that the screws used to install the MAF sensor are longer than they should be. I had to use a couple of stainless steel washers to keep the screws from popping through the molded plastic intake tube. I notified Volant of this. So, I would check to make sure you didn't have the same issue. If you were to poke through it may cause some turbulance causing a whistle. Also, which filter do you have? The oiled filter or Donaldson Dry Filter?
