Doug Thorley headers (ticking noise please help)
I just installed the Doug Thorley Shorty headers on the L99 and getting a ticking noise from the passenger’s side. You really don’t hear it at idle but when you give it gas you can and when the AFM kicks in you really can. I checked for leaks and nothing I even took them off and reinstalled. Is this normal sound.
Thanks for any help. |

When I put headers on my truck I had this same thing happen. It turned out to be the header's collector was not lined up correctly with my "y pipe" causing a leak. I realigned it and the sound went away. The best way to check for a leak is to put your hands around the collector and feel for air leaking out. Careful you don't burn yourself!!

I figure its normal-ish. Probably due to the thinner walls, and therefore less sound deadening headers. Makes the cylinder deactivation louder, I guess. I checked for leaks a couple weeks later, and found none. I havent noticed the noise recently, possibly cause I am used to it, idunno.

Installed a set of ARH and exhaust a while back and my car now has this little ticking noise. It can be heard more like when your in the drive through. I agree that it's the thin wall headers. Stock manifolds hide some of the engine noise.

it could be header ping aka high compression. I got a set of Hooker Supercomps on my 69 and it has the header ping.
It scared me at first but after realizing what it was and that the primaries are not that thick I understand. Get a piece of black rubber hose stick one end to your ear and the other all over the header and listen. If its a leak you will hear air suction or pulsating if its ping you will hear the same sound through the hose as you hear from your normal position. welcome to higher compression engines. Headers bring out the sound in a car for sure |

I have Doug Thorley's on mine and had the same problem. Turned out to be at the collector, gasket wasn't seating correctly. Added another type gasket in addition to the original and that took care of it. Bet that's what your hearing.

You guys re-tightening after it's fully warmed up? Wear gloves and get in there to snug them up.
On my '68, I installed my Doug's with paper and aluminum gaskets to prevent the leaks. It helped after only installing the aluminum dead softs (which leaked).

Found it today it was a gasket leak on the bottom. Went and got a new gasket and the ticking is gone. I guess that’s what I get for using the old ones. Thanks for all the help.
