Another reason to have everything thoroughly inspected by a competent, well trained and certified Chevrolet technician, is even if there hadn't been a fire where wiring insulation could be possibly melted, oil itself is bad for plastic and rubber. It can deteriorate it over time. You need to have anything in the engine bay that may have been covered in oil cleaned properly.

This is a VERY good point. Not only to protect against injury but also to protect the sensitive computers on you car. There's hundreds or even thousands of wires going all over the car from the headlights to the tail lights, from the roof to the wheels. And they are all interconnected somehow through the car's computers because on modern cars computers control EVERYTHING...... even your power windows and trunk release.

A faulty wire in the engine compartment where the main wiring harness goes through the firewall (in which case there are at least a couple HUNDRED wires) could incur a problem with your left turn signal, or only when you run the wipers on high and squeeze the washer fluid trigger, or only playing the radio on XM with the headlights on.

Definitely get EVERYTHING inspected.

Myself and 2 friends have had engine damage following being lazy and taking it to a quickie oil change place... Never again.

OP, along with getting it in writing I would have gotten a police report written up. That peice of paper could end up being worthless, if they decide to be dicks about it.

I agree with everybody, take to the dealer or learn how to do it! it's worth it. If it were me, I would be consulting a Attorney as well..... Just in case! but that is just me.

When dealer does my oil change I stand there and watch!

Had my oil changed Friday at the Chevy dealer,$29.65. Is the quick lube place any cheaper than that???

My last car 01 Pontiac Grand am took from the dealership to the audio shop to have them install my Amps and new Head Unit in the car, was on the way home and the car had a electrical fire in the engine due to the idiot running the power line next to the exhust.. Took the car to the dealership for inspection and for them to fix it, since they recommended them.. Have the dealership do an inspectiion on the car, and have the place pay for it if they charge you...

I change my own oil, nuf said. To believe you guys actually trust your faith in Dealer techs. There is so much about these cars that dealer techs don't know just to warn you.

Sorry to hear of your issue, I agree with the great advice from everyone here.

Oil is not friendly to rubber, plastic, & paint. Since your engine caught fire I would also have it towed to the dealership and have them inspect it. If something is wrong you don't want to find out while you are driving - especially if it's safety related. Get the quickie lube to pay for the tow/inspection/repair. They should also be paying for your time, but good luck getting that back.

If they hedge, tell them they should be happy they're not having to buy you a new car.

I'd have had it towed from the lube place straight to the dealership had it been me. And boy would they have been hearing about it every second we waited for that tow truck and my rental car.
I hope your car's ok. Ditto to all of the above regarding possible damage and what to do.

Lucky you! I couldn't stand and watch at mine. Only the Toyota dealer let's me. The jeep dealer doesn't either.

I stopped taking my car to the dealership after I heard the technician speeding in it on his way to the service bay. Adding insult to injury, it came back from the oil change with a scratch on the bumper
