How about a DIY for removing the insert. I was thinking maybe an upholstery shop could recover it with material similar to my cloth door panels or even red leather.

I found a diy on painting the trim, it shows how to remove the dash insert... http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...47#post5458547
The only tools needed are a 7mm driver, phillips screw driver, and either a flathead screw driver or trim removal tool.

I'm going to guess it's got a clip mount just like the rest of the dash. I should have guessed that's how everything was snapped in but I didn't realize it. To think early on in this thread the idea was that the entire dash had to be replaced.

I think what happened is the tech used the wrong tool to remove the insert and damaged the dashboard so the entire thing needed replacing. I may see if they will order the part and let me install it. But I doubt they will. My suggestion is do not use a flat blade screwdriver, use a trim removal tool, they are plastic and won't damage the dash. They are cheap at harbor freight, I got a whole set for $4.99 and they work great.

Anybody have the TSB number on this? I found a large bubble to the upper left and right of my radio on mine yesterday while wiping down the dash. I'd prefer to have the TSB# in hand when I go to the dealer so they don't play dumb...
GM must have used some really crappy glue on these. My Camaro was born in April, 2012, sat on the dealer lot for 20 days before I found her and has been garage kept since then. I only drive the car on weekends and evenings and use a Heatshield reflector when I park the car while out and about. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's not like the car has been constantly exposed to high temps. Again, they had to have used some really crappy glue. |

My replacement piece has bubbled up almost uniformly above the radio and from looking at it straight on, you can't really see it. The only way to see the slight difference in the surface is to look from the side between the steering wheel and dashboard.
Until there is a TSB issued for this problem, I'm leaving mine alone. |
