Grattan Track day w/pics and video

I have been a bit MIA as I have been busy with life...but I wanted to share my latest track day at Grattan with the 1LECTSVSSZ28.

I was instructing at a 2 Day event at Grattan Raceway in Beliding MI the weekend of Sept 27th and 28th. I borrowed the Bid Red Truck courtesy of my friends at Rodgers Chevrolet and headed off to the track. the weekend weather could not have been more perfect...70s and sun all weekend.

I had two new mods I wanted to try this weekend: Z/28 Wheels with Hankook RS3 305/30/19 tires and Hawk DTC-60 front pads and DTC-30 Rear pads.

Previous Lap times
  • May 2013: 1:31.47 (1 Glory lap, Consistent 1:32.xxx) STOCK
  • Sept 2013: 1:30.22 (Consistent 1:30.xx all day) Pedders springs, Intake Avg: 124 on the straight
Added Brakes/19" wheels and 305 tires
  • Sept 27, 2014: 1:29.43

  • Sept 28, 2014: 1:29.76 Averaged: 128 on the straight
TIRES: :( So why not bigger gains/lower lap time? honestly I think it is the tires. the tires work, but they are not great. I think the stock Goodyears when hot are a much better tire. The are more sharp on turn in, they do not heat up as much and they feel better on the edge.

Pads: Pads worked as expected. They are aggressive but allowed me to brake deeper than before. front calipers are now a nice shade of burnt gold.

Other notable:
  • Drove a new Hellcat that a friend named Ralph Gilles brought to the track along with his Viper. We go back about 16+years and his wife was my student in her GT3 that weekend. (He was running 1:22s in the Viper) The video of the Hellcat recently on Jalopnik is from the same weekend. I didn't push the car as it was not mine.....But it MOVES on the straight!!!
  • Drove the 2007 GT3 on Race Tires on track.....UM YES PLEASE! not much more I need to say...(picture below: white helmet/blue shield)
  • Yes, I have all 4 wheels off at about 80 MPH. there is a braking zone and then a right just after you touch back down.
Tons of pictures on the link and a video from my fastest session. After the GTR let me by he chased me for two laps or so and I let him back by. He is also an experienced instructor and I was happy to be able to play with the GTR.

Awesome pics. Now need your help Matt. Was at Waterford Hills 2 weeks ago, had a blast. Except, all of the loose rubber on the track is now fused to my tires. Do I just drive it off?

Yes!... Or a quick burnout will clear up the rear. Some hard braking will clean up the fronts.

Some guys get all the luck. Runs SRT, owns a Viper, has a wife with a GT3, and she drives it on the track.

My wife on the other hand, tells me that I'm a pre-pubescent child every time I start the car.

Great pictures! It looks like an awesome time. I'll have to make it out to Grattan next season.

The season is quickly coming to an end. Oregon Raceway Club is trying to organize one last track day before closing the season next week. I hope they do, so I can try the oil cooler and full Z/28 suspension (on 1LE wheels shod with G:2s this time). I hope I can make it!

I checked out your video. The tires were squeaking so much! I did buy the same tires, and they look very nice to the eye; it's disappointing that they do not match the grip they promise.

If only we had NT01s in 305/30/19; those tires are not the best in terms of grip, but they are very consistent. After all, if a tire quickly loses its grip (like R888s which are available), how can I know that the new way of taking a turn benefited me or not...

I researched MPSC 2 tires, and they seem to be quite a bit slower than Trofeo Rs for the same money, so I don't think they're a good buy.

I think I really need to decide if I should have just 1 set of wheels, or two. This applies to you, too. If you had two sets, you could elect to have Trofeo Rs on your Z/28 wheels, and Hankooks on another set (like APEX's ARC-8 19x10.5 wheels spin-forged @ 22.95 lbs that I am considering) for street use.

Tires, and brakes: I don't like these subjects for Camaros : )
