Helmet for autocross and tracks

Where's the best place to get an open face helmet for autocross and track events? Are there better brands than others? Thinking about doing my first autocross event next weekend and they require helmets.

I picked up a bell SNELL rated 2010 helmet. Works great.

Is it better to have an open face or closed face? I feel like there would be visibility issues with a closed face.

Buy a nice motorcycle helmet, and pull the face shield off.
Then tell your spouse that you now need a motorcycle.
Purchase motorcycle when spouse is out.

Problem solved.

Before you spend a bunch you may want to wait until Oct 1st when the snell 2015 helmets are released which will give you a 10 year rating over a 2010 which some events will only allow 5 years.

If you're set on an open face I can't help you there, but I got a HJC motorcycle helmet for 130 on Amazon. It is the CL-17 model (snell approved). I was specifically looking for a motorcycle helmet because I hope to get back into riding in the future and I can use the helmet for both. Doing my first autocross tomorrow morning.

I would get a racing helmet with a closed face....you do like your face right? I have raced for 30 years, trust me on this one.....unless you are full 5 point harness and hans, your face will be on the steering wheel so fast you will not believe it.....Airbags don't always deploy, centrifugal force does..........LISTEN TO BACKEDDY!

My 2 cents,

Go to a local race supply retail and try some on. Fitment is critical on a helmet and the wrong fitment will waste all the money you spent when you need to buy a second helmut. Go Get a proper fitment and spend the money ONCE on a decent coconut protector.

There is a difference between motorcycle and racing helmets. You need to understand this. Many PDE and xcross events won't allow motorcycle helmets. Motorcycle helmet linings aren't required to be fire resistant and racing helmets undergo extra styles of impact tests (think single hit for motorcycle and multiple hits for racing helmets inside a car against a cage). Also, think about an airbag going into your face. You probably want a full face racing helmet. Not open face or motorcycle helmet. Just my 2 cents.

Please don't get a motorcycle helmet. I have a full face Gforce and it works great.

+1, this is the one that I have as well and it works great. Haven't used it in a few years, but was comfortable enough when I did need it. If glasses are an issue for you, it fits easily over those as well.

I would also only go with full face for the issues mentioned above. It doesn't restrict visibility much as they usually have a pretty broad shield, and the added protection is invaluable.
