This car in the Lemay museum in Tacoma has the Aluminum block 427 ZL1 engine and was raced / tested by Mickey Thompson

I love the original ZL1 and how they stuffed what was essentially a race motor in a production vehicle (much like the Boss 429). What's curious is how Chevy is always using words like heritage and lineage when it comes to the Z/28 (which is fine), yet the ZL1 is so far from it's true heritage it shouldn't be called a ZL1 according to Chevy's own thinking. I love the fact the new cars handle and brake pretty darn good for a such big, overweight car, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Drag Pack option that is street legal (not the COPO). I know it will never happen, but just wishful thinking.

Hot Rod Magazine had a real good article about the engine in last months issue. In the 60's Can-Am racing was the pinnacle for speed. In 1968 Chevy put a all aluminum engine, block and heads, 427 cu in in a McLaren and dominated the competition for about 3 years.

If I remember correctly, it dominated so much, Porsche complained and soon after a displacement limit was put in place which ended it's reign.
