Z28 faster than Z51 Corvette Stingray at VIR

My new Car and Driver Mag says that the "The Camaro Z28 proved to be quicker around VIR ( http://virnow.com/track/) than the Corvette Z51 at 2014's Lightning Lap."

Unfortunately, they story won't be published until their October 2014 issue.

Interesting because a lot of people assumed the Z51 Vette would be faster around a track than the Z28.

Put the same rubber on the Vette, they should do that with all these tests.

I'd be more interested in what the Z06 does when it comes out. They're closer in price and a more direct competitor in that regard.

I would not worry about it.

The base Corvette is selling faster than they can make them, and with 460HP on tap, few if any cars in their price segment are comparable.

Z/28 is to musclecars, what a Z06 is to supercars.
Camaro SS is to musclecars, what a Stingray is to sportscars.

I say go up from there. Put race DOT's on all track cars tested. The widest R6's that the factory rims will support.

Z51 was $57,995
Z28 was $75,000

So there's a pretty decent price difference.

BTW (in their testing -pretty slow, but we don't know the conditions DA)
Z51 ran 12.5 @ 116 mph
Z28 ran 12.7 @ 116 mph

Z51 weighed 3460 lbs
Z28 weighed 3862 lbs

Almost exactly a 400 lb weight difference. I thought the Vette was lighter than that.

I'm not sure if the front wheels/tires would fit on the Vette?
And isn't that what the guys driving the Mustang GTs always say when they lose to a 1LE?

tires are the only thing making contact with the pavement, make it equal to see what is what. R rated or something available in all sizes and take it out of the equation. A set of track tires can take 3 or 4 seconds off a set of stock tires. The difference between a 50 wear rating tire verses a 200 is huge.

Yeah, and having 305 series front tires doesn't hurt (305s are ridiculously wide for front tires).
I'm suprised the Camaro SS doesn't come with wider front tires (275s should come on the SS). 245 series front tires are a little too skinny for a 3900 lb car in the twisties. GM could leave the 245s on the V6 Camaro. This would be similar to what they did with the 4th gen.
The 4th gen Camaro SS (which weighed a good 300 lbs less that the 5th gen) came with 275 series front/rear tires.

Nope. Sadly even with the Z06 aluminum frame and some carbon fiber, the C7 got heavier. For one, the aluminum torque tube had to go to steel in order to make the DoD workable. I think that added 50 pounds or so. Plus the interior is finally average to above average and I think that added a bit more. And to enable a Z06 vert and improved stiffness overall, I think the aluminum frame on the C7 actually weighs more than the C6 Z06, but I haven't seen numbers to support or refute that assumption.

I think GM is quoting a lower curb weight though, something less than 3,400.

It doesn't surprise me. The Z/28 should be quicker than the Z51 Corvette on a road course, especially on a track with a lot of turns.
I want to know what time it ran on VIR.
