At what point do you realize it's just too much power?

I've always said I'll stop modding my cars when it scares me to drive it. The stock ZL1, to me, is just too tame. The factory tires do make the car "interesting" to drive, but besides that factor, it just isn't enough.

Some of the guys on this site are making some outrageous power, how you guys have the nerve to handle anything over 800 hp I'll never know. I have the bug to start modding, but where it stops with this car I really don't know.

I'm wondering at what point did you realize "I think I may have gone a bit overboard"?

It never does. I bought my Z cause I thought it was a perfect car, after I sold my 2011 Camaro SS. It was SuperCharged, cammed, LT, alky control, mantic clutch, axels , etc etc. I said never again. Now look at me, It never ends.

The answer to that question varies on your driving skill, the way you drive (some guys never go over the speed limit and just go to car shows) and the way you have the car set up.

My car on factory tires will blows the tires loose anything under 75-80 in hot weather and 100 in cooler weather. To me that is getting to the point where additional power is unneeded on the street. I track my cars though so I could use another 3-500hp at the track with sticky tires.

The moment that you realize that is too much power , it's already too late

Horsepower is like drug addiction. You get used to the dose you're currently taking... and crave more. My ZL1 only has 3900 miles, at first the power was plenty for me... now I want more.

When it becomes a money pit and you over spend your budget and the car is no longer a joy to drive on the street.

This, the voice of reason right here.

That is a great question. I bought a new 13 model Z and I drove it about 2400 miles before I started mods on it. One time I was driving it when it was stock and went to pass a car at 62 mph and I floored the gas pedal and the car got loose. I said then I would not touch it but like what was said above you think, gosh just a little more hp and this car will really be bad ass! Well I took it to andy at ADM in texas and it left there with over 800 hp at the motor and 711 at the rear wheels. Now I had to use caution with the car because even at half throttle the car would spin the tires and it would make you give it your full attention while driving it. You sure did not want to hit it hard passing another car but you did not have to because it had more than enough at half throttle. I sold that car because I just was not comfortable driving it. I bought another Z that I have now and it is all stock and I am leaving it that way. No more mods for me.

Wow, it sounds like you answered my question perfectly. You modded in excess, realized you made a mistake, then bought a more sane replacement. I've had quite a few "pucker" moments with just the stock car. I'm sure the car would be much more enjoyable with a set of drag radials, considering I'm more of a straight line kinda guy. The F1s just don't cut it at anything more than stock hp.

You know you've crossed the line between too much power and not enough when this happens.
