IOM Mismatch Paint Theory

ok, so now that we have ours, i have a theory about the mismatching front clip that folks are talking about.

this paint has pearl in it. in the light (especially sunlight), each angle reflects a different intensity of the pearl. if i look at it one way, it all looks the same. look at it another way, and it looks mismatched.

i truely believe this is an illusion caused by the pearl. here's a pic i took that shows the left side looks fine but the right looks mismatched. it's because the sun is on the right reflecting the pearl which gives the illusion that the paints different.

my theory anyway!

There is no mismatch it's the same paint. Paint cures differently on various surface types.

If you made the front fascia out of body metal it would look exactly the same finished as the body. But it would not meet the Federal 5 MPH crash bumper. This is why they went from steel to poly in the first place in 1978.

I think you have it! This paint is so sensitive to the light being put on it, the intensity, the color, the polarization, and the angle of reflection, that people are just fooling themselves into believing the paint is mismatched.

So Chevrolet, please go ahead and ship mine, I promise I won't complain

No he's wrong and I am right. It's the base material.

Of course all metallics change shades in light. But this is not the complaint.

You have 2 different materials so when the paint dries and cures some colors will just look different.

Either live with it or get another color or car cause making it with metal is not gonna happen.

The system does not change to different kind of paints. So the paint is of course the same. The curing.. the same. What's different? One is Galvanized metal the other is a Polyurethane.

My 30 years in the paint industry, most of them automotive, may shed some light. The pearls used in automotive color refract, not reflect, light differently on different shaped surfaces. The fact that some panels look different than others is probably due to the different shapes, and could also appear different due to the amount of basecoat applied, which affects the amount of pearl) or the amount of clearcoat through which you see the pearl.

Now to the bumper covers-they are in fact painted with different materials and are cured differently than the sheet metal parts. In fact, on some cars, they are painted in a different plant and shipped to the assembly plant.

Hope this helps.

Reasons:
  • Plastic substrate vs metal
  • Painted in different places at different times
  • Different sized fluid tips will make the same paint, on certain pearls and metallic, look different
  • The angles at which the parts were sprayed was different
I have an IOM2SS and I would guess, after looking at my car, that one or all of the above criteria were met.

Pictures of SIM are doing the same thing from door to rear fender and they WERE painted at the same place and time.

White/black will be the only color not to do this.???

I saw this car up close and personal, it wasn't mine but it's the color I ordered. If you are looking at it in good sun light you are definately gong to see different shades of orange. That's part of why I love this color. I spent over an hour looking at ever angle possible. The color changes before your eyes. I fell further in love with it. It goes from dark orange to a golden orange. If people take this for mismatched color then possible they haven't seen what pearl does to a color. Pictures don't do this color justice. Look at this picture I enclosed. The right side is out of direct sun light the left is in direct sunlight. car definately looks like 2 different colors. Ya have to see it to love it.
