please read the facts about factory stock ZL1 engines. not legend. facts. the ls3 is superior. i posted head flow stats. i posted castings.
they are 375 SAE net hp. not bad for the times, but nothing by todays standards. cam the ls3 as radical, use headers, etc, and your talking 475-500 rwhp. about 570 crank hp. it is what it is. 1969 flow and velocity technology VS yates inspired combustion chambers of the LS3. stock; 50 state legal, and the LS3 owns the ZL1. how crazy is it, that im the only one defending the LS3. can you say irony. i dont even like the ls3. im a LS2 fan.

As far as modding, and the LS3 vs ZL1 and defending one vs the other I guess I don't understand your desire to hammer at the ZL1 of 40+ years ago. It was what it was, and not everybody owned one or could go down and just buy one. If Chevy didn't constantly get better over 40+ years I guess they wouldn't have an LS1, LS2 or LS3. I expect them to get better, not the stay the same, and I'm glad they have.

It's pretty crazy... Where ARE you getting the 375hp number??? I think you got hold of some bad info.

I'm not positive on where it came from, though I have seen it pop up elsewhere. I think someone ran one on an engine dyno shortly after the new test was created, and they got 375 SAE net, as opposed to the 425 SAE gross that was advertised, and the 'substantially more' that was claimed.

There's just too much information out there that supports well in excess of 400hp from the original. This is a snippet from vetteweb.com where they tore down one of the anniversary motors. The new motors are peaking ~450hp and ~490tq fresh out of the crate. That's with milder compression and hyd. bumpstick.

the snowflake on the intake manifold on an all aluminum 427 means it came from and was made for the 1969 ZL1.

Yup - it's also on the block, above the timing cover, between the ribs (Winters Foundry). I think the blocks came painted black, so without a magnet, these were one of the identifiers of ZL1 engines.

The 1969 ZL-1 Camaro was a monster of a car.Back in the day a friend of mine bought his from Motion Performance he had the engine Blueprinted using stock Chevrolet components, running open headers and slicks ran 11.8 at 122 MPH in NHRA B/Stock class. I don't see any stcok LS-3's or L-99's running that qucikly without Forced Induction.
