2014 underhood temps and cooling?
So as some of you may know I'm ordering the 2014 ss hood with vent as well as the ss front end for some aero pieces by g5 carbon as well. My question to you guys is has anyone measured the underhood temps in a v6 after a drive around town? Then Measured it again with a vent to get a change in temps? I'm not expecting anything too drastic but living in the south every bit helps during the summer! On a side note any other v6 camaros, challengers, or stangs in the new orleasn or northshore area I'm trying to put together a club for meet and greets lunches and for going to nola motorsports events

I have the hood vent on my 2011 V-6. I can see the heat waves coming up, but the engine still runs between 195 and 205 because of the thermostat.

IIRC the hood vents on all Camaros (ZL1, Z/28, SS) are for down force... The heat extraction is just a plus.

Right I'm not expecting a drastic change but the faster the heat can get out the better. How come nobody makes performance radiators or thermostats for the v6 engines? It'd be my next mod for sure!

I believe the thermostat is a serious chore to get to on the V6- somewhere on the back of the engine and with all the variables the ECM can control with these high tech VVT-DI engines, you don't get the performance benefits of running cooler like you did on earlier (cruder) computer controlled vehicles.
Now if you're not up to full operating temp (or just fool the computer into thinking you're cooler), you can do more harm than good. One example might be that the ECM will give you more timing advance when you're cooler, but it may not open the throttle as fast, or as wide if it thinks the engine is cold. Your foot ain't in control no more! And On-star may be selling the amount of time you're driving above 100mph to your insurance company... or law enforcement! |

"You talkin' to me?"
Might be illegal now, but have you read the Patriot Act? OK- I was just seeing who was paying attention. If you can find a well ported IM for the LLT it is definitely worth it! |

I have the lfx. I know the lfx intake manifold is a composite material. Has anybody ported it?

Because it composite, it gives Chevy a lot more control over the shape of the ports and therefore it's pretty optimized already.
The only guy who might working on further enhancing it would be Jason@JacFab But he's a mad-scentist looking dude... so he probably knows what he's talking about. |

Yeah I've seen some of his posts before seems like a knowledgable guy. Might get I. Touch with him. I'd really love to get the heads and exhaust ports done as well. Anyone ever do this?

Not to my knowledge on the LFX and only in very limited numbers on the LLT- I think Phastek may have sponsored 1 set just for investigation and Mace maybe 1 set. But after cams proved to be a disappointment, interest seemed to dry up in the idea.
And we just totally thread jacked! Sorry guys! |

Ah who cares I started it anyway :p
One thing I am worried about with getting the 14 ss conversion is rain leaking onto my future ipf supercharger |

ZL1 had the vent first and it's got a S/C sitting on top. I hear that vent is quite an engineering feat. I don't think (so long as you're using GM parts) you've got anything to worry about.
And the LFX+IPF=Fun Fun Fun! But seriously, disconnect your On-star before you do! Last edited by Ventmaster; 07-13-2014 at 02:36 PM. |
