It's not needed sir, dual timing chain is so Chevy 350's lol all you need is a C5r single row. Besides harmonics are what really breaks chains. Ls2 dampner a c5r t/c and a good crank pulley.

+1 I spoke with a Cloyes rep about the dual chains... He said either use a Schaffler chain or a C5R chain if you want, the dual chain is heavy and cant take the higher RPM abuse that the singles can take because of it. |

Go online and do some research. Iwis timing chain/gears with LS9 dampner = nearly bulletproof.
It is the strongest most reliable set up when upgrading or doing the L99 to LS3 conversion.

So this is something that only needs to be changed when doing the conversion or a cam install? I have an LS3 as you can see in my sig along with those mods... is this something I should change out for peace of mind or what? Thanks!

I changed mine out with the cam swap since the stock timing chain and its bits had to come off anyway to do the swap. That way the labor was included.

You really only need a T/c when adding cams or cam n heads. IMHO.
But changing that tensioner to a dampner would be a good idea and if you do that might as well change the t/c I guess. Lol ultraz's if Im not mistaken was a stock motor and it broke.

C5R Timing Chain
If you are going to be doing any upgrades that require the front timing cover to come off replace the stock timing chain with the C5R timing chain and replace the stock tensioner with the LS2/LS3 Bowtie Damper. This is an absolute must do if the timing cover is coming off.

It has had an slp/powerbond UD pulley on it since about 1k miles and the car has about 10k on it now. I have read an aftermarket underdrive pulley can change harmonics and contribute to the ls3 tensioner failure as well. But it has also happened with the stock balancer so who knows. |
