Weird Dyno Numbers

So, I went to get my Car dynod last saturday and came across some crazy numbers. The car only has a cold air intake, which is only good for 20hp at most, and 1LE gears (which can suffer from parasitic drivetrain loss showing lower numbers) and it somehow managed to get 396HP and 400 Ft/lb TQ.

A tuned and intake 5.0 made 395 HP, a tune and exhaust intake 2008(?) gt500 made 505 HP, and basically stock 05 GT mustang made 290 HP on the same day.

Has anyone made this close to stock for a 2011 SS or is mine a factory freak? Thoughts?

Forgot to ask, did they compensate for the 3.91's?

No tune. Didn't tell them about the 3.91s. Was I supposed to?

I have drag radials (not that it makes a difference) and electric cutouts but cut outs did 2hp better closed so it made no difference.

Download the WinPep app and get them to send you the file. Overlay HP and TQ and make sure the lines cross at 5252 RPM. If they don't, then the calibration is off. Also change it from STD to SAE correction.

Dynos can say whatever you want them to it seems. I had my dead stock ZL1 auto on a dyno and the lowest # it showed was 531 hp and 560 ft lbs. On a Mustang dyno last week after a cai, vmaxx throttle body and a tune Im pulling a much more realistic 504 hp.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how would the 3.91 gears create a parasitic loss? And if they did, why would you put them on your car...?

3.91 gears won't add any hp on a dyno

I get that, but you said they create a parasitic loss... How?

3.91 gears will add torque if you're not careful. And since horsepower is a math product of torque.. See if you do a run in fourth gear a 1:1 trans gear with a 3:45 rear, say you pull 400ft lbs. don't change the dyno settings at all and throw in some 3.91 gears and make a pill in fourth gear you should read 13% higher torque 3.91/3.45=1.13x100=%113 so you should get around 452 ft lbs. see where I'm going with this? As someone said you can make a dyno tell you whatever you want but as long as you aren't plugging in all the factors your numbers can be very inflated. Is your car a 'factory freak' like most of the 1le guys claim? Same as them, I doubt it.

No, it doesn't work like that.

Next time youre at the dyno, make some pulls in 3rd and 4th. Despite the 4th gear being a higher ratio, it will make more power to the wheels.

Your statement at least proves one of my points. Your gearing WILL change your readouts.

HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252

This is why. Your Rpms are different. You're doing more work in 4th because of the gearing. Horsepower in short, is an application of torque over time. Changing from third to fourth gear is very similar to switching from 3.45s-3.91s

Changing from STD to SAE will lower the numbers a fair amount. I would estimate that change alone would put it at a "normal" dyno measure.

For the one posting. Next question is it an inertia dyno or mustang dyno? I.e. How much weight of resistance used? That will play a role too.
