Yet another phone scam...

Got a "missed call" on my cell... didn't recognize the number, and it was out of the area, so I did what I do with MOST numbers like that: I call the number back, from my corporate work phone. Sometimes, I'll Google the number first, but that does not always yield results... and this particular number ((312) 809- 1206, for anybody who cares) mostly showed people reporting that they got hung up on whenever they answered. I have no idea why SO many scam calls are like that, but, that's how it is.

So, I called the number from my work phone... turns out--- even with my made- up/ fake name, I was a winner! I won a $100 gift card! And all I needed to do was to provide my credit card number to cover the $4.95 postage and handling.

Gonna disconnect my home phone soon... turns out scammers do not heed the Do-Not- Call list! I endlessly get calls from "Windows technical support:" They have detected a problem with my computer, and need me to relinquish control so that they can remotely access my computer. They are unable to tell me my own name, what computer I have, or how they have detected the "problem," but they are there to help me, I have been assured (Just to be perfectly clear: Don't give these people anything, when you get the call: It is ENTIRELY fraudulent, and the person on the line (who will invariably have a thick accent, because they are not even IN the U.S.of A., generally) has no other goal than to STEAL your information. Nobody can "detect" a problem with your computer, as they claim. Sometimes, if I am bored, I'll toy with them, see how long I can waste their time (hey, I feel good about taking that time away, time they would otherwise use to steal somebody's info), but usually, I don't have the time. The endless calls are making me nuts, though.

Or, "Officer Whoever" who has called me, and a number of friends of mine, over time. He has a warrant... but, for $782.15, he can get the warrant suspended. Apparently, I missed responding to a jury summons, or sometimes, I failed to pay on a camera- citation. Whatever the case, if I pay him, using a pre- paid debit card, I can get another 90 days to get it taken care of. Otherwise, the cops are on the way, right now, and they are taking me to jail!

Don't fall for any of this stuff. Use your head, consider when ANY of these don't make sense, and never, ever, ever give any information to a caller: No credit card numbers, no personal info, no computer info, nothing. Ever. Please.

Hrpiii, my credit card info is as follows: 4074 4111 9319 3325, validation code 802, Exp. 09/17. Take however much you need (plus a little tip for being helpful!), and then tell me how I can make it even more awesome!

I'm no sucker... not going to let THIS opportunity slip through my fingers!

Whoever might have that actual Visa card is in for a big surprise next month. If it turns out to be valid you should buy a Power Ball ticket.

Okay, brutal honesty here: In order to avoid the incredibly remote odds of accidentally posting numbers of an actual card belonging to an unsuspecting victim, I used numbers off of a tapped- out and expired gift card (Good eye, Zed... it IS a Visa...). If anybody is able to squeeze any MONEY out of that thing, then THEY should buy a Power Ball ticket with the money!

There were too many loopholes in the do not call list rules. They know the possibility of getting caught is slim to none.
Anyway they also use a method called spoofing where they use valid phone numbers that show up on peoples phones instead of unknown caller, this way if you call it back they know nothing about what you are talking about. I had one call 4 days in a row from the same number that was local. I called it back and it was a answering machine so I left this message. " I have your phone number name and address, if I receive any more of these calls I will be contacting the police." An hour later the lady called back and said she had reported my threat to the phone company. After I explained what I was talking about she told me she had no idea. I did some research and contacted the police and they told me about the spoofing going on. The hangup calls you get are how these people are getting valid phone numbers to use in spoofing.

I like the credit card serving calls where they instruct you to press 1 to connect to an associate. I put my phone on speaker and go out to the garage. As soon as the person comes on the line, I blast them with the horn on my Harley. If they actually stay on the line, I screw with them a bit longer. Often, I will say someone is at the door and put the phone down for several minutes. I have able to string some along as long as 30 minutes.

A few ways to deal with telemarketers:

1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and
you could sure use some money. Ask, "How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever
pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?"

2. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to
know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care
these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my
eyelashes are sore, my dog just died...." When they try to get back to the
sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems.

3. If the person says he's Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, ask him to spell his
name, then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located.
Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long
as necessary.

4. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Judy
and I'm with Canter and Siegel services.... You: "Hang on a second." (few
seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?" (*I
dont think Sprint will ever call me back!*)

5. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Judy!! Is
this really you? I can't believe it! Judy, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this
will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where
the heck she could know you from.

6. Say, "No," over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an
even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can
keep going until they hang up.

7. If Sprint calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends
plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any
friends...would you be my friend?" *MY FAVORITE*

8. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat
blood or HUMAN blood - chicken blood too?"

9. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary
feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or, "That's
fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They
get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card
number to someone who's a complete stranger.

10. Tell them you work for the same company they work for.
Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Watertronics."
You: "Watertronics!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?"
Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too?
How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling
to employees! Oh well, see ya."

11. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone
number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out
their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call
them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of
Telemarketers). If the person says, "Well, I don't really want to get a call
at home," say, "Ya! Now you know how I feel."

They hang up on me and wont call back for at least a month. I have fun with these d-bags
