Why is the Camaro built in Canada?

First I must say.....This is not at all a negative comment about the Canada group that does such an awsome job building our cars.
I was just wondering what the reason was that the build location for the Camaro itself, and the motors that are in them, is in Canada? Again I hope I am not coming across as being negative in any way......Just looking to be educated as to the reason. I know labor overseas is next to nothing but I don't think this is a reason, but I am not sure.

They've got to be built somewhere, and Oshawa is an excellent plant.

I'm not exactly sure why the Camaro is built in Canada now,but I bet someone here know the answer

I can only speculate from my experience and witness.Camaro's were built at either the Norwood Ohio or Van Nuys California plant from the beginning.

I have a feeling it was due to NAFTA and the UAW issues at the time during the late Eighties, early Ninety's.
The Eighty's build quality on the Camaro was marginal at best.
When the new 93' model came out it was built at Oshawa in the heavily invested plant makeover.

Not knocking any of the US UAW workers at all, thats for sure. The build quality of todays "North American" vehicles rivals the rest of the world.

I will say though that my ,then future wife, worked across the street from the Van Nuys plant during the late Eighties at the Dept of Social Services.

We used to have lunch together from time to time and we used to watch the plant workers go across the street at lunch and go to the liquor store, kick a few back, and go back to work.

It was cool though watching them stage the IROCS in the parking lot.

Canada seemed like the place to build GM muscle cars since the next most recent facilities, those that built the 2004-2006 GTO were in Australia. These are countries where English is spoken. After New Zealand has had their chance, GM might get around to hiring Americans who speak Pocho and Ebonic.

Bzzzzt...none of the above.

The ontario government pays for workers health care so the unions don't need to include that in their compensation. Thus, the cost of building cars with unionized labor is cheaper in Canada than the US.

The cost savings are passed onto us Thank you Ontario tax payers !

So is that why Canadian owners pay 5K to 8K more up there for thier Camaro's.
Or is it additional sales tax?

Ste Therese was closed also because of its location, being too far north. Not to mention its work force was very senior.
