Hopefully they are also trying to win back some of the brand recognition and loyalty they have squandered over the years. It is so cool to see the young kids (and big kids) get excited about a car. At summer camp my 8 year old is known as the kid with "that awesome car" and the counselors still ooh and aah over it after 2 years.

The goal? Sell cars, make money and profit. Only reason to make any car.

Trucks yes. Sports cars? Camaro is profitable but most performance vehicles are low-volume niche products.

Dump a highly profitable, globally recognized and successful brand with a laser-focused lineup and one of the highest conquest rates in the industry and keep a brand that had zero global presence outside North America and sold a metric crapload of units to fleet every year?

Yeah, that makes sense.

How is selling a lot of units to rental companies not profitable? A buyer is a buyer right? I don't understand why it's so different from selling to an individual, unless they're just giving them away when they sell in bulk.

You answered your own question.

Selling to retail is more profitable than selling to fleet.

I guess nobody reads books anymore.
Read: "Camaro, A Legend Reborn" by Larry Edsall.
It's all there. Scott Settlemire signed my copy 1/23/10.

There's an old business axiom, " Loose a little on each and make it up in volume." That's the bottom line in mass production and market share. Too many businesses want to maximize profit on each individual sale. Talk about dealer mark-ups here!

Here's another way to say it "a quick nickel beats a slow dime every time". GM wanted my business. They built a car that finally made me happy to buy a new car. Mission accomplished.
