QUESTIONS ABOUT OEM TIRES HYDROPLANNING

On my 2014 ZL1 with 8,000 miles I have the factory summer rated tires. Where I live I might see 6 nights a year hit 32 deg. Winter days average above 50 deg. or warmer. Temperature here is ok to run the summers year round. My concerns are with standing water on the highways. This is my daily driver 80 highway miles every day.

How do these tires rate for hydroplaning?

Thanks for all your info

Dimitri

I drove in steady rain once on the freeway. I told myself I would never do it again. Those tires did not like any standing water at 60 or above. Once I slowed some it was better.

as far as I'm concerned the GY G2 tires are "ONLY" good for holding your car up while its sitting motionless in your garage. (display model)

This actually made me laugh out loud. They don't actually hydroplane that much but because they are so temp sensitive they are not good in the rain, they will always run cold on water and are unpredictable. Drop a gear to pass at 70 in light rain and get totally sideways.

If you put the car on a road course and the temp is 90 outside and dry they are amazing tires. They are pretty amazing holding the car up in the garage also.

I've driven more than a fair bit in the rain, slow down, be careful. I managed to live through the original tires. I had a few close calls, and it got scary a few times. But now went for something more suited to daily use. I got the Pirelli P-Zero's.
WAY Better in the rain, but of course they're new compared to my 3/4 worn good years. I haven't tried them in the cold yet, but they can't be worse than the GY's.

A tire that is 12" wide on a car has a bigger chance of hydroplaning. Some tires are going to be a little better but that chance of hydroplaning goes up with tires that wide.

I ran into a rainstorm last week and on a 70mph highway, had to slow to 45mph and drive on the humps to keep her straight. Not good at all in wet weather.

Less than 2mm tread depth in the back (more like 1,6mm'ish) and doing 50-55 on the highway in the rain. No Problem.

I even went 100mph and above in rain last year, with more tread of course. Guess it was something between 3,5 and 5mm back then. Problem is you don't know when the shit hits the fan unless it's to late, but it worked flawlessly. Was kinda insane tho. When you're driving with your SS buddys u don't want to slow down in your Z just because of some rain...

Never have any issues with the Goodyears, except for when i force it.
Heavy accelerating when entering the highway has to be done carefully, but its okay, it is a 600hp car, lots of torque and 285/305 tires, what would you expect. It's no Subaru.

Use tha pedal on the right as a pedal, and not like a switch, and it simply works.

I'm driving in rain, too, and i just got myself a new pair of the Goodyears. Because they just stick. Only semi-slicks work better, but then you have to avoid rain.
