Using the OEM Speaker Adapters
Has anyone reused the factory adapters on the 6.5 & 6x9 speakers? My understanding is they have to be cut, can anyone share their experience doing this or if it's even possible/worth it. In particular, how do the replacement speakers attach to the factory adapters. If you have pictures or a link to something already posted that would be great as well.
I know there are vendors and other methods available, so thanks in advance for that info, but I'm curious about using the OEMs. Thanks, Byron |

Some one has done it and written up s procedure on doing it but I do not know who did it. It does destroy the factory speaker I believe.

Thanks ehcsa5, I ordered adapters for the 6.5 but not the 6x9s. The shipping on the 6x9s is equal or as much as the actual adapter from one of the vendors here. Once the 6x9s come in I'll give it a shot.

I am actually in the process of doing my door speakers right now. I found a video showing the process on Youtube a while ago, and it is fairly simple. You do have to cut the old speaker cone away and then snip/dremel off the various plastic struts holding the original speaker from the inside of the ring. The top of the ring, where the speaker attaches, there is some foam that you want to clear away and then depending on the size of your aftermarket speakers (Mine are 6 3/4"), you may have to trim away the lip at the top edge. But only if your speaker mounting tabs extend a bit beyond the edge of the ring. There is a small (apprx. 3/4") ledge on the top of the ring that you will drill the mounting holes for your new speaker. Now, the person who made the video did not do this next step, but I just wanted a stronger surface to mount the speaker to. I didn't trust the relatively thin plastic ledge, even though I was probably going beyond what was needed, so I taped off the inside edge of the ring an fiberglassed about one to one and a half inches thick on the inside wall of the ring. Just to have a more solid foundation to screw the speaker to. I mounted one just an hour or so ago and it worked great. I am waiting for the other one to dry. An added benefit, I believe, will be additional sound dampening. I will report on the sound quality after I get everything back together.
