getting used to clutch
Just picked up my 1ss yesterday, and I am having a hard time driving it so far. Last two cars I have owned have been manual, and I just sold my 97 SS that was manual so it's not like I haven't been driving stick. But for some reason I am having a hell of a time with 2nd and 3rd gear right now, I am letting it out too fast I think. I am sure this is just going to take time, was this an adjustment for you too?

It will take time. Ive had a few different clutches in other cars from a stock LS1 clutch, 6-Puck Racing Clutch, LS7 clutch and they are all different to drive.

I've got a ZL1, so however different that feels I'm not sure.
But I've driven many manuals in the past and have had no trouble going between one and then another and not struggling with the clutch. But it definitely took some getting used to on this car. Just take it easy while you get used to it, it will become second nature before too long.

Agreed I had a hard time at first my way is to push it in only 3-4" at most bc the travel to the floor is way unnecessary with how much travel it has. Try that and you will master it fast

Yes! It took some time to get used to. I am gonna say about two weeks, so maybe a couple hundred miles? And that clutch smell? That goes away after a while. I guess it is normal to smell that and you aren't really doing anything bad.

I felt the clutch on mine was more "springy" compared to any other car I've driven. At first I didn't like it, but it'll grow on ya!

The SS 6MT comes with a damnable feature called "Skip-Shift". At low speed and light throttle positions (do a search for the exact parameters), the computer locks out 2-3 forcing a 1 to 4 shift. The good news is you can permanently eliminate this for $30 shipped by buying a plug for the solenoid from Phastek, a C5 sponsor. They have an installation video and this is the easiest DIY you'll ever have. The only difficulty is getting to the solenoid which is toward the top of the trans case (best done on a lift). http://www.phastekperformance.com/20...eliminator.htm Last edited by Indydriver; 02-15-2014 at 01:40 PM. |

Its not you. The ratio for 3rd gear in the stock SS took me some time to get used to. The 2-3 shift was awkward. I drove a 1LE (which has different ratios) and the 2-3 shift is more expected.
The good news is with practice you will be shifting smoothly and forget about it. |

just drove home in my new M6 and it feels to me like the RPM's are a bit slow to drop. I think its less about the speed you let the clutch out but that the rpms have not dropped low enough yet if you try shift really quick. I was finding pulling it out gear with out clutch depressed then pressing clutch in neutral and sliding it into next gear was a better timing or just have to shift regular and let up a little slow so rpm's have time to drop. I think its going to take some experimenting to figure out how to smoothly shift really fast.

I found at first when I was trying to slam the gears from 2-3 I would try and force it. If you push almost straight up then it goes into gear much more easily. Get used to it just cruising and break it in some and you'll get the feel for it.

Are you fighting the skip shift?

Best advice, don't try so hard and don't force it ... If you slow down a bit, it will slide right in ...

For me it was low or normal speed, but when I got into it a little it was fine, I just had to adjust. For it to be a hydraulic clutch it sure feels like my 70 nova.
