I swapped out my good L99 pump for a Melling when I installed a cam. The L99 is ok but a bunch of folks had issues with the LS3 pumps even stock. I personally think it's an installation issue even when installed in the factory. This is the main reason they fail.

For some reason the L99 pump can handle more misalignment on the crankshaft therefore they don't fail.

How do you install a pump wrong?

Not centered around the crank snout right.

Here is the proper way to install the pump using feeler gauges to make sure there is enough clearance.

I install pumps with the bolts just finger tight, spin the engine over by hand two rotations and then torque the bolts down. My LS3 takes 8qts dead on the money BTW.

Really?! I picked up my GM HO pump this afternoon for my replacement. I chose not to go with a Melling because I had two of them go out on me years ago; 1 on my 01 TA WS6 and 1 on my 96 Z28 LT1. Both were modded motors built with Mellings. There wont be a 3rd time.

And I thought that was an L99 thing! I didn't know Ls3's took 8 quarts too lol.
I've done the pumps the same way myself But only Mellings.

I went with the dealer's advise, at least it's warranted
Given a choice, go with high volume, not pressure.

Sorry but I'd rather be on my own!
The Mellings are blueprinted and are made of better materials. That's the reason your valve relief was stuck open/closed because of the materials. But yes I agree use the high volume one ie 10296 and it comes with a high pressure spring if you'd like.

My stock pump was so tight on one side of the crank, I couldn't stick my thinnest feeler gauge in there. This causes friction which can lead to possible valve relief getting stuck. Either the pump was slapped in from the factory or it shifted over time.

Loolks like I may have lost my oil pump on an L99. Just about pulling into my shop I lost oil pressure and the valve train started getting noisy. Checked oil level, all is fine. Going to try to make some room in my shop today and get it in so I can check it out further. I'll keep everyone posted on my findings once I get into it.
