GM Tech Center UAW Local 160/1869 and Explorer Scouts Win at Detroit Autorama
Tech Center Explorer Scouts Win First Place at Detroit Autorama
The UAW Local 160/ Local 1869 GM Tech Center Explorer Scouts won first place, beating out several other great entries in the Contemporary Hardtop 2008 – Current Year category, at this year’s Detroit Autorama. The gold, black and red 2010 Camaro custom paint job shimmered under Cobo Hall lights with its 14-carat gold flake spray. The scouts replaced the production engine with a GM Performance Parts Commemorative 427 cubic inch, all aluminum, ZL1 Chevy Big Block Engine, like the engine that was used in the famous COPO Camaro’s in the late 60’s. The Camaro also had a GM Accessories ground effects kit, grille, and a one-of-a-kind spoiler. The interior was redone with special leather, padded seats, and a custom painted door trim. The Explorers finished off the Camaro with a trunk-mounted video gaming system. The car is dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and features congratulatory plaques signed by GM executives and UAW Local 160 representatives. GM will retain ownership of the vehicle until it is sold at auction. In addition to the first place award for the Camaro, the scouts won first place with their 1975 Chevrolet Pickup truck in the Restored Pickup category. The Explorer Scouts, which are a division of the Boy Scouts of America’s Learning for Life Program, teach young women and young men age 14 to 20 about career choices. The UAW Local 160/Local 1869 GM Tech Center Explorer Scout program specializes in teaching about careers in the auto industry. Sorry I don't have pics, but it's a beautiful car.
