Oil change interval depends on how you drive it and the conditions you drive in. The harder you drive it, the hotter the environment, the more often you should do an oil change. Changing the oil and filter early (within the first 500 miles) is a great idea because it clears out any of the junk left over from the assembly line including the early wear particles from the engine breaking in.
After that you should change it at anywhere from 3000 to 5000 mile intervals depending on your driving and conditions. Although the manual doesn't state this, I would recommend you also change out the trans and differential fluid early for the same reasons you do the engine; to clear out any production line junk and initial wear-in particles there might be. The majority of all that happens in the first 500 miles. Changing early ensures clean filters and fluids for the rest of the break-in period and gives your engine and drivetrain a better chance at a long and trouble-free life.

Looks like you have it straight now though...I personally changed it out early after break-in (along with the diff fluid) and now follow the OLM. |

3,000 to 5,000 mile OCI's are a thing of the past and are pure myth. It's a waste. The only time it is acceptable anymore is if you race. 7,500 to 10,000 OCI's are the norm and have been proven time and again through UAO's and testing. People need to lose the "old school" mindset of 3,000 to 5,000...there is no need for that fairy tale anymore.

every 500 miles, now that would be one clean engine.

Wonderfully Awful Idea
|
I posted this on a simular thread.
All good info just remember its not just the ability to lubricate but viscosity to build pressure to be pumped thru all the farthest reaches of the system but the filter can hold just so much particulate. Don't forget that the break down and burning of fuel produces other than particals,- acids and water vapor a filter cannot remove these. Proof is if you have ever opened up an engine with over 150K on it. You'll find other things than nice clean oil. I use Mobil-1 changed at 5K not because of break down but to remove what the filter cant. All this is just using my "uncommon" sense and never had any problems. Yet!

I have a 2000 Ford truck with 242k on it. It still runs good. I change the oil every 5-7k. This is not very scientific. But it worked for this one truck.

Hey guys I was reading a thread on here where someone said you had to give your camaro a oil change every 500 miles... I looked it up and couldn't find anything on it. Just to be safe I gave mines an oil change when I hit 500. Im comin up on 1k now and just wondering if its really true. Can anyone confirm this?? thanks!

Actually he's right for synthetic oil.
It's advised that you change your oil no later then at 1,000 miles per quart for dino oil and 1,500 miles per quart for synthetic. Most cars hold 5 quarts and most people use dino which is where the 5,000 mile or one year mark came from. |
