V6 vs Inline6
Can someone please explain to me the advantages of both? I know that BMW uses inline but it seems like most of the auto industry has moved to V6. I know the basic differences but would like some deeper explanation. Thanks!

The prime advantage of a V6 is that it is much more compact than an I6 (essentially half the length). The length of an inline 6 pretty much restricts it to front engine/rear drive configurations whereas a V6 will fit in nearly any engine bay. So why would anyone want to use an I6? Balance. It has 1st and 2nd order balance. Its too late right now for me to explain why this is good, maybe someone else will. If not, I'll add more tomorrow.

An inline 6 is cheaper to manufacture, that is really the main reason I can think of. As was mentioned, it is only really practical in a Front engine/RWD layout though, and very few companies restrict themselves to this layout like BMW does.
An inline 6 has one head, only requires 1 camshaft (for SOHC) or 2 camshafts (for DOHC), one timing chain, etc. Compare to a V6 and obviously you will need 4 cams for a DOHC engine, etc. It is also cheaper and easier to machine the block when all the cylinders are inline. This is why I-6 engines used to be more popular when the majority of cars were RWD layout.

If I remember right the I6 also provides a lot of torque.
I know the one in my old 67 C10 did.

Yeah, inline configs are a bit better for torque

An inline 6 is also in perfect balance. A 60 degree V6 is in primary balance but not perfecty balanced. I6 is smoooooooooth like buttah!
Packaging is the big difference though. An inline six would be 50% longer than a 4 cylinder and maybe 25% longer than a V6. Now for a FWD car, Daewoo (GMDAT) had a transverse mounted 2.5L I6. But now out of production.
