M6 advice mechanically uninclined
Hey everyone, so I just joined because.....yes I want to buy a 2012 SS/RS M6. I have been doing my research, drove the Automatic and M6,and have been reading threads here on Camaro 5. Then I started looking up what problems might be occurring and......now I'm nervous cause of the shift problems with the M6. So what I am still unsure about is this issue still happening in the 2012's? I;ve printed the thread from Oxtar41 detailing the carbon blocking rings
issue.I have yet to speak to my GM service dealer as to their understanding of the issue (or if the even acknowledge it). It seems as though some folks with 2012's are still having this shift problem. I,m just a guy who wants a cool fast car but am not a good mechanic. I was going to buy an older 60's muscle car ready to go but my wife suggested just go out and buy a new one!!!! How cool is that. I didn't even have to beg. Ha Anyway, any other feedback is appreciated, I hope I posted this in the right place? |

Personally I have had no issues with my 2011 manual, for whatever that's worth. Poking around in all the "issues" threads isn't going to provide a very balanced outlook I don't think. I'm sure they'd be outweighed by the "i have no problems" threads if people made them.

I have a late model 2011 SS M6. I've only had the grind a couple times. Both when I shifted fast right after start up. It didn't matter how much throttle.
This is due to the factory trans oil I believe (there was a TSB, technical service bulletin, about this saying it's normal). Test drive one again and note the feel of the trans right after start up, and then once the trans temp needle gets above the hash mark to the left of the 180* mark. You'll need about 20 minutes or so of driving to see. For me, once the car (trans/engine) is fully warmed it shifts like butter! I would not be deterred on the M6 in the SS! If you were buying the V6, I would definitely stay away from that manual trans. I also have the factory Hurst short throw and LOVE it.

Thanks for advice. I know it's easy to freak out on some reviews online. I will definitley speak with gm service mng. about this first. I hope to order in about 2-3 months. I drove with the Hurst, so maybe I'll try driving the standard shift.

Hey welcome to the site. I am on my second 2011 SS. I had a 2011 ss A6
first and traded that for 2011 M6 and love it! Don`t get me wrong the A6 was a great car to but just didn`t do it for me. I also was skeptical about the manual after reading about all the problems people were experiencing with them. But then after test driving the manual i just had to have it. I do experience some notchiness from time to time but am not worried about it. Well good luck to you what ever you decide to do.

HEy Bow Tie 1,
Seeing your '76 is really bringing back some memories for me! I'll have to dig up some pics of my old black 76 ( I was 18), scan them and post. Anyways thank for feedback. Can't wait for next test drive, plan on longer drive and really get a feel for M6. ( I babied it last time). |

Overall based on all the research I've done on the issue; The M6 TR6060 has issues with shifting at high RPM.
If you drive to work and the grocery store at 40mph. then you won't have any issues but once you start doing any spirited driving and shifting at 4500-6000rpm. that's when you'll find out how lousy the tranny is at shifting. It's a solid tranny up to about 650tq., but it inherets some bad internals and that's where the issue resides. Further, there is a fix available however, my understanding is the fix is to use non GM parts, and therefore, your warranty will not resolve the issue. Some folks are going to other vendors to have syncro rings and some other upgrades to resolve the issue. |

We have quite a few upgrades available for the TR6060 transmissions. With our full Level 6 package we have eliminated the issues most people are having with TR6060. Here is a link to our builds on our website.

Thanks for the reply. It seems a big hassle to correct what shouldn't be. I mean, a few thousand for upgrade, switching to extra reservoir , new line, and this 1-4 shift thing just seems like.......too much. . I'm still not sure, but that stick sure felt awesome on the test drives.......can't quite get it out of my head.

Love my M6. I've read the same posts you have about others having problems. All I can say is for 21 months and 31,000 miles I have not experienced one problem.
I'm suspecting you see more complaints about the M6 tranny because those who have not experienced problems have no need to start threads or post. |
