Boston Acoustics break in period.

I recieved my CGM 2LT RS on Saturday and drove home with a pre selected music selection. In the 10 mile ride home I became very disapointed in the distortion at a medium volume. I listen to a lot of rockabilly music which can push the bottom on any sound system. I played with the equalizer and it helped a little but again, I was dissapointed.
My stereo now has over 6 hours of play time at low to medium volume. I stopped at the local high end audio store to get suggestions. One of there techs and I started listening and the speakers sounded great, I even played the same tracks that upset me on my ride home, Loud.
I known you need to break in a speaker system, but forgot in all the excitement of my ride finally coming. Give the system a chance before you do any upgrades, unless you want to be the guy with the loudest stereo at the stop light?

These speakers aren't really doing it for me, they can't handle grateful dead very well.. especially when phil drops the bass bombs

I didn't realize stereos had to be broken in but maybe that explains it. I thought I just had not had a chance to tweak it to my liking the 1st day or 2. But on the 3rd day, I really focused on tuning the EQ where I usually like it and have been very satisfied. Thought I might need a sub at first like I had in my other car but now...no sub required. The more tunes I throw at it with the deep bass tones, the better it sounds. What is more impressive is that you don't have to turn it up that loud to feel the bass. I only have my bass turned up to 8 out of a possible 12 which blows my mind. I love the BA system! The sub money now goes to the headers and catback!

I've been adjusting settings on the head unit with my iphone connected via USB. Listen mostly to classic rock with a little hard rock mixed in.

Settings:
Treble: 5
Mid: 2
Bass: 5

Happy with this so far. 500 miles on the car, and 4-5 hours of music playback so may continue to change as speakers get settled in.

Disclaimer: I'm not an audiophile - this is just to tide me over until my exhaust upgrade

Also watch the speed sensitive sound settings - I adjusted and realy enjoy the BA speakers and sound system overall.

Actually yes speakers do need to be broken in. They are very much like pistons in your car. The coils are like you rings and need to be moved at low to mid levels for breaking in before they can handle the long throws and extensions of the cones.

When I owned night clubs we would always let the speakers warm up with low music for 1/2 before we started cranking them. Considering they would be pounding at 5-6 hours at very loud volumes the warm up helped us from blowing any. They only speaker I blew when owning my EV system was because one of the 18" cabinets began to seperate around the mounting area and cause the coils to rub uneven in the cylinder and they locked up hard. We blew 2 subs until I saw the cabinet mounting sleeve where loose and off center.

Please no not the speaker break in. I am a huge audiophile and love to design my own speakers for fun (yes i am a sick person). The suspension (spider and surround) on the speaker breaks in within a couple of minutes of use and that is it. I dont know how coils break in since its just copper or aluminum. (the inductance and capacitance will change from temperature and spacing but just so slightly that it is inaudible).

A lot of people agree with me and a lot of people disagree, but i have seen a lot of tests and a speaker does break in a tiny bit (spider and surround), but so little that it is inaudible to the human ear. The break in period is you getting used to the speaker, not the speaker changing sound. Also messing with the EQ will make a big difference.

Just to remember speakers will sound completely different with the windows up and the windows down, because
1. You have changed the resonant frequency of your interior
2. When windows down you have decreased the size of the enclosure your front speakers see. When windows up, they have increased.

A good read for everyone.
