If your Camaro has the rally stripes put on after being finished at the factory, it gets driven to another location to install them, putting about 13 total miles on the odometer before it gets to the dealer.
At least that was the way it was done for the 2010 model.

My car had 160 miles on it when I bought it "new". I've always wondered what kind of abuse the car endured those 160 miles.

I agree. My car had 263 Miles on it when I bought it. They had to get it from Pennsylvania (I live in New Jersey) to get one how I wanted it. My salesman did tell me about it to make sure I was OK with it and my response was: "I am fine with it".

I even know a guy who used to drive cars from dealer to dealer when a different dealer had one that somebody else wanted. They usually give those jobs to retired guys who don't beat on the cars (I can only imagine the responses I will get from that last sentence).

The dealer from Pennsylvania traded my Yellow Camaro, for a Red Equinox from the dealer in New Jersey (just figured I'd throw that in for the heck of it).

Sky had 610 miles on it. Was on the lot for a year. LOL

BTW, you do know who is paying for those cars right? Dealer has to finance their own inventory so essentially it's his/her property to "evaluate". For example, if someone went to test drive a car and "didn't return", what happens? Who's insurance company pays who for that?

Dealers can do what ever they want. They own the cars.

While I can't argue - I do think it's irresponsible for them to allow their kids to drive them.
In the end, however, it's the person buying the car that has to assess if the mielage on the car is acceptable to them or not.

My car was purchased with less then 10 miles on it, but the dealer drove it to me. I can only imagine the fun he had flooring my car, but it got to me with no damage and just a bit more mileage then purchased. That was my choice and I'm ok with that.

I've worked at car dealers for 21 years. I wouldn't buy a demo. All but one of my new vehicles have been special ordered.

Mine had 307! Didn't even care...it was the exact configuration I was looking for, and the only one available without ordering at the time. It was driven from PA to my dealer in Ohio...and it was perfect in every way...not a mark on it. It was still new, and my warranty expiration is 3yr/36,307, 5yr/100,307!.....so who cares how it was driven...I can assure you it wasn't driven any harder than I drive it every weekend!

THe dealership does own the cars they are driving home. It's legally new until it's titled regardless of miles. it might be poor business to add miles to new cars like that. But around here anyone can test drive any car on the lot - thus the miles on it when you buy it.

Most cars are not owned by the dealer. They're are on a floorplan.

I sold cars at various Rochester NY dealerships from August of 1975-March of 1981. I drove new cars as demonstrators, sometimes having 3 or 4 a year. The factory would allow up to 6000 miles to be used as a demo. The car would be sold as a demo, but would come with a full new car warranty. This practice of demo's started many years ago when you drove the demo vs. a new car on the lot. Afterwards it became a sales perk. Very few dealerships have their salespeople drive demo's other than the owners and possibly managers.
