Master Clutch Cylinder Leaking- Clutch Damage?
My 2011 2SS 6 speed, hurst short throw Camaro (29,900 freeway miles mainly in 6th gear) is in the dealer right now because my 'low brake fluid' light had been coming on.
Recently they just replaced an oil cooler leak. They just called me and said the master clutch cylinder is leaking and is what causes the clutch plates to engage properly (from what she told me). The cylinder repair is covered under warranty - here is my issue: 2nd gear has been hard to get into for a while and sometimes I just go 1st to 3rd. I have noticed my clutch engaging at different points for a while too. It is one of those things that I think, "Is this just me or is something else going on?" Now I have evidence that something WAS going on. For reference, I put 230,000 miles on an Acura 5speed WITH THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH and sold it without clutch problems. Every mechanic that serviced it was amazed at my ability to preserve the clutch. I want a new clutch because who knows the damage or how many miles have been taken off the life of my clutch because of slipping due to a faulty master cylinder. How do I go forward with this because I expect my clutch to last a long time! Thank you for any help, the dealer is not wanting to do anything to the clutch!

Maybe I understand your issue? - It isn't slipping. Leaky master cylinder loosing pressure could cause difficult shifting but it would not cause wear on the clutch. The clutch would not be suffering from slipping - it would only disengage the disk partially during shifts (less disengagement than normal) when you pushed down on the pedal. With the pedal up, clutch would act/hold normally. Fix the master cylinder and no need fix anything more.

Ok, that is my hope, that no wear would be on the clutch. And this could explain why shifting into 2nd is hard at times?

Loss of hydraulic pressure will cause the slave cylinder to loose travel. Clutch can't fully release the disk when you push down on the pedal and that makes getting it into the next gear difficult. The synchronizer can't do it's job if the clutch disk is still being dragged around at the motor rotation RPM. So it "grinds".
Let them fix it and you should be fine. -Mark. |
