OnStar glitch
So less than 2 months after my bumper to bumper warranty expired, my onstar is starting to glitch. The onstar light in the mirror randomly turns red. If I jump in the car later on, it's back to green. It's happened 2 or 3 times now that I've noticed. I had onstar check and they said its operating fine and said I should take it to he dealer, out of warranty :(
Anyone heard of this before? |

Let it sit for a bit (couple of weeks). They did it to mine under warranty, but the red light never returned when I went back to the dealer.
They replaced the onstar module, and programmed onstar to my radio.

On mine...during a -20C day it happened.
Turned out that the back-up OnStar battery was weak. They are one time use, & not rechargeable. The OnStar back-up battery is used if you get in a collision to contact OnStar.

Interesting. Never thought it could be a battery. It is 3 years old now. Can it be changed out easily by me?

Dealership advised that all Onstar service is performed by a 3rd party company contracted by GM. There would be an $80 diagnostic charge to determine the problem. The final bill to replace the back-up Onstar battery was $395.44. If you look at the attached schematic it shows the battery (item 24) up under the dash as a part of what appears to be another assembly on components.

It is not too bad to replace, you remove the glove box. Unclip the string, then pull it out, then remove the screws under that then you can get the onstar module and battery. Anyone that has done the HUD install has had to remove these to remove the dash.
