Storing DIRTY towels until time to wash them?

So I did a and came up empty.

Is there a 'best way' to store dirty microfiber towels until you have enough to justify washing them?

I had been storing them in a bucket of water with some micro-fiber restore in it (essentially pre-soaking them for a few weeks), but the last time I did this I smelled mildew. So I'm wondering if there is a better solution.

Also, my towels aren't as soft as they used to be. I'm wondering if the lengthy pre-soak is part of the problem.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I simply put them in a walmart plastic bag, one for paint safe towels and one for dirty job towels. When the bag gets full it's about time to wash. Obviously don't put wet towels in there, allow them to air dry first.

I wouldn't let them pre-soak for that long, but I'd recommend putting them in a bucket with a ounce or 2 of APC. I would only leave them like that for a day or two though. But usually when I was my car I'm using at least 8-10 minimum, if it's a rinseless wash then it's closer to 12-15+.

And to make them softer you can try boiling them for about 2 minutes with a small amount of vinegar to re-fluff them but that's more so for towels that are no longer absorbing. If they are holding wax it can affect the fibers and make them stick together as well. Then wash/dry as normal.

You aren't using fabric softener are you? Because that's a big negative and affects the towels. Over time microfibers lose fibers making them rougher. When this happens I push them to interior/engine/wheel duty.

I have one of those portable drying racks, and just keep them on there to dry out until I can wash them.

Cardboard box...if really wet, let them air dry on my buckets first for a while.

I wash them as soon as I am done. I have a mini wash cycle on my machine.

Thanks for the input. I figured leaving them to dry would make any dirt and grime more likely to stick, hence why I pre-soaked them for so long while i built up a half load to wash.
