Do nail/screw punctures tend to destroy the 20" Pirellis?

Here's why I ask:

I know nail through or near the sidewall means the tire is destroyed.

But in my old LS1 car, I must have picked up 100 nails, screws and bolts (large ones too) - and NEVER lost a tire. Usually it was a slow leak that I could drive on for weeks (and just use my small compressor to air up until I could fix it), or maybe slow leak over hours.

However, a friend with a Beemer hit a couple of nails, that led to instaflats and destroyed tires.

What is the Camaro like in this? Anyone hit a nail or 2? Does the tire tend to survive? Does it tend to fast leak or slow leak?

They are the same as any other tire. If the puncture isn't too big it can be patched, if it is on the sidewall it cannot be patched. Whether it leaks slow, fast, or blows apart has to do with the object and where it damages the tire, not the brand or tire size.

I have one patch in my tire from a screw. My tire pressure warning light came on, I pulled over to add air and went the dealer for the patch.

I had a small screw in mine that resulted in a slow leak and was able to take it off and patch it up. No issues so far and it has been a couple of weeks.

I wonder...

if this is legit to retain a speed rating? Is a patch safe for 120mph? A plug? I ad always assumed if i put a hole in one of the these you would need to replace it or assume it's capacity for speed and handling safely is now comprimised. Thoughts?

Good question, in the past I always moved patched tires to the rear because its easire to cotrol rear tire loss than front tire loss. I do not know if any of the tires intregrity is lowered. I have not heard of any example to prove that this is the case.

all your major tire company's state that a patch plug is the only correct way to repair todays tires and they would be fine for normal usage. not just a patch or a plug but a patch plug, the plug fills the hole and the patch seals the inner liner to ensure no leaks, these are 1 piece patch plugs, so dont confuse it with inserting a plug and adding a seperate patch on the inside.
after a tire has been repaired it is fine for normal everyday driving but it's speed rating is out the window, the forces and temps from extended high speed runs may still cause a tire failure after an extended period of time since the tires carcass has been comprimised by the puncture and repair.
so if your going to your local drag strip and it's been properly repaired i would'nt worry about it but if i'm going to a road course or i'm running in the silver state classic were i would be seeing triple digit speeds for an extended period of time as well as excessive loading from cornering at high speeds i would be concerned about a tire failure.

I have plugs in 3 out of 4 tires. The tires seem to be a magnet for screws and nails. Haven't lost a tire yet
