Axel back does offer a performance increase. Just not necessarily that of a cat back system. Chopping 35 lbs off the back of the car and putting some mufflers on that actually flow is certainly an improvement.

Gotta find a way to eventually replace and upgrade the stock cats and mufflers, which are typically the most the most restrictive on exhaust.

Axle backs are great start for sure, but according to these forums only give you 2-3 hp/tq gains at most, and is more of sound upgrade.

MRTv2 axle-back works out to $550 for /3 hp gain = $183 per hp gained, approx.

Solo Mach-X-LFX cat back $900 / 10 hp = $90 per hp gained, approx.

Seems like cat back provides the better performance and value, but deff more expensive upfront. That's why some are of the opinion to just save a bit longer, wait, and just go w/ cat-back, cause in the end, most ppl end up upgrading to cat back anyways.

Don't have $1000 right now to dish on new cat-back, so will have to wait a couple moths. In this Florida heat and humidity, it bothers me that my 1LT is not getting the best breathing because of inferior grade OEM exhaust.

Is 7 more HP (theoretically) going to be noticeable enough to justify spending almost twice as much on the exhaust?

there is honestly no performance in a cat back alone. is 5-10HP really that great? is your car going to get FASTER? no really.

when talking about axle back and cat backs. its not about what gives more HP, because really they dont give a lot anyways. its about what sounds better. cat backs usually sound better than just a axle back (muffler).

Unfortunately, no its not enough to notice. Its all about what system and what sound it is that you want.

I agree. I meant my question as a sort of rhetorical question for the OP to make him realize he is nitpicking the wrong things when it comes to an exhaust.

Ah, ok. This is what i hate about forums, you cant really tell from plain text the context of the posts sometimes.

Unfortunately havent seen dyno numbers, except those claimed by manufacturers. ARK claims their dyno tests show cat-back 12hp gains, Flowmasters AT say 15hp, etc. Plus they make better sound than just mufflers, apparently. How reliable are these manufacturer's claims? If they're reliable, then are the 8-10 hp gains + better sound than only mufflers, worth the $1000?? If they're less than that, then deff not worth the $1000, imo.

I'm not going to say that removing the stock mufflers is a bad idea, however, everyone seems to overlook that they do help smooth airflow under the car and are part of the aero dynamics in connection with the rear diffuser.

Discuss. If you want to, that is.

They may help round off the aerodynamics in the rear of the car but that doesn't mean those two huge trash cans don't look absolutely awful from behind. I'll take a minor hit in underside aeros vs those atrocious steel boxes.

Not to mention the weight that you will dump getting rid of them.

Give me 40lbs in weight savings and better sounding car and ever a little hp gain, than the crappy oem mufflers. The weight savings alone and little hp will overcome the decrease in aero effeciency, if any.

Yea, isn't it like 35lbs depending on the mufflers chosen? Sure as hell easier than going on a diet

The weight saved will help counteract the spare tire when I pick one up, too

i lost by 2 cars without the cat back and cat delete.
