Seeking Long Tube Emissions & Codes Knowledge
Got a nice bonus and want to purchase long tubes. Read all the Long Tube threads. I am seeking knowledge about how tuning out codes works EXACTLY.
What are the exact tuning options?
The long tubes & offroad pipes should meet my performance and sound goals. As for Emissions, Arizona emissions apply to me, so I do not care about other states emissions laws. I want to be able to pass my local emissions. Can anyone with direct experience with this help me to understand what the changes made to the tune are? The changes for passing emissions, NOT the changes to AFR and timing for performance. Again, seeking only to learn what is changed in the tune for passing emissions? Sure would help me decide about pulling the trigger on an order for headers.

Best way to go is with high flow cats, at least you're somewhat legal there. By removing stock cats that are not defective, you (or the shop that does it) could face a steep fine if caught. It's just not worth the extra couple of HP from not having them at all....use o2 extensions and get a tune with the headers/high flow cats/x pipe/exhaust. Sound will be great and quite a bit more HP and TQ to boot. While the inspection may only consist of plugging into the OBD2 port, if you get pulled and checked visually, could be a bad thing .If you're still set on running without cats, just turn off the rear o2s in tuning.

Yes, set on running without cats. So is turning off the rear O2s detectable during the emissions testing? Seems like they could read that they have been turned off?

not a tuner , but have seen where they can be made to read "ok " or "pass" via tuning . Maybe someone with HPT or another tuning software can help in this dept. The OBD2 port is only gonna tell the reader what the programming says, it's not gonna electronically dig to find out if it's been tuned.

Any tuners out there that can contribute? I'd like to buy some long tubes, but I want to know what I'm getting into first.

There are 3-4 checks/faults that you turn off in the tune for the rear O2 sensors. The emission check will not see this, it only checks to see if you are throwing any faults. Also, just because your check engine light is not on does not mean the computer isn't registering a fault code. |

Bank 1 & 2 sensor 2 for the following: O2 control circuit, O2 heater resistance, O2 low voltage, O2 insufficient activity, and catalyst low efficiency. There are different settings for turning on the check engine light (turn the the light on after 1 or 2 faults detected). You need to set them to no error reported. You also need to disable the catalyst over temp protection, the catalyst test, and the post O2 test in the tune.

So that begs another question, what tuning software/product do you use for your 2010 camaro?
