3800 Sc rebuild need help

So I'm rebuilding my 3800 SC V6 to drop in a fiero. I have all of the 1998 grand prix GXP shop manuals from which the motor came. The books say that there should be an arrow on top of the piston indicating that it should be pointed to the front of the motor. After over an hour of cleaning a single piston there is no arrow simply a casting number of sorts. Having not torn down the motor myself i don't know which way it was in the car. Anybody here ever done this or something similar enough to help? Please let me know.
