Your very lucky it's still holding up. Do you track the car at all?

Is this the 6L80 they beefed up to hold 1000hp? if so can you give us an idea of what they beefed up.

I guess a 376 15psi of FI and +200 nitrous are too much for the 6. Now they are running 427s. They got tired of paying for rebuilds and made the move to the 4L80. The 4L80 is a TH400 with overdrive. It takes the horspower with no problem. ARD's signiture car has one in it behind a 468 stroker and LOTS of nitrous. He drives it to work everyday and thrashes on it for the events. The 6L80 would never stand a chance behind it.

If you're building a 700rwhp+ your going to get frustrated with the 6L80's weak points. Circle D has done some great R and D work but the builds now are more demanding. The only disadvantage to the 4L80 conversion is knowing what else to change in the car to make it work. The 4L80's final drive ratio is slightly higher by about 10% on the cruising rpms compared to the 6th gear of the 6L80. The 4L80 will allow you to run a steeper rear gear ratio b/c of its 1st gear ratio of 2.48 verses the 4.08 1st or the 2.38 2nd of the A6. That also means the 4L80 has a narrower set of gear ratios more suited for competition.
The 4L80 seems like the smart think to do, even if i rebuild my 6L80 consensus is it won't hold for long past 650rwhp.
Like you say though to do the 4L80 conversion what else do i need to change.
Gears? got 3.73's on done last season at Jannetty's Converter? just installed a Circle D 3200 stall. Not sure what else is involved to do the conversion need to do more research.

Sitting in the corner is not an option
Did you get the 4L80 installed yet?

I let them do there magic but really the hardest part is getting the car to shift in that range but I would give them a call I know there trannys are lasting in the 700-800 range.

Mine let go on the dyno yesterday after doing a 416 forged/stroked motor.
Looking to rebuild it now was wanting to know what evryone else is doing.

Mine just got back from the shop in LA.

Upgraded 6L80E included:

Alto Red Eagle 4-5-6 & 3-5-R clutch packs

Raybestos friction pads

TCS 300m Intermediate shaft

New TCM

Some welding of the stock clutch hubs and splines

TCI StreetFighter TC.

Granted, I'm not over 600rwhp yet, but I plan on doing a 416ci with twins in the future.

Sorry to hear that. The problem with the 6L80 is that it's only rated for 459 HP (yes...to the crank). I blew mine up on the freeway and just made it into the shop. The 4-5-6 clutch pack actually fused together. I was running around with 600 RWHP at the time. I had the 6L80 built, and ran with it up to 700 RWHP. Once I decided on the LSX 427 I wanted to move up to the 4L80. It's a blast to drive and will handle whatever I throw at it. Here's are links to the 6L80 and 4L80 builds.

So after talking with a few guys here on the forum it looks like the decision was made to go with the 4L80e. 2 tranny shops keep coming up.

http://www.jakesperformance.com/4L80E.html
&
http://rpmtransmissions.com/gen5camaro.html

Of coarse no one can count out
http://www.rosslertrans.com/4L80E.htm

So now its a matter of narrowing it down to a certain tranny shop.
Anyone who has dealt with these shops, good/bad experience lets hear it.

P.S. Russ that manumatic looks like a blast to drive.

It is. I also love that you're adding clutch packs instead of switching them. I can stay in boost all the way down the track and never lose forward momentum. You'll lose power, but you'll improve your 60'. Besides...that's what smaller pulley's and larger nitrous jets are for.

you seem to have the best pics for a tranny, jakes is mainly a forum tranny builder with good reputation..the others have more solid reputation...but i wnet with jakes, i like to work with small shops and feel i get more with my $$$$...so i called mike @ jakes and we worked out all details and i feel very comfortable with him..searched 100,s of boards and only 1 complaint i found on jakes and it seemed that the guy was trying to get over... and i read 100 positive remarks on jakes...but i,m sure you can,t go wrong with the either 2 ...call mike @ jakes and tell him mike sent you..good luck

So i finally got the car back from my shop with the 4L80e swap, what can i say this trans feels like a racing trans, it shifts very firm and aggressive especially the 1-2 shift, you can feel the car jolt.

I turned over to my tuner sitting in the passanger seat and asked him if this was normal, he said yup that's how a 1000hp tranny shifts, WOW

It feels like a totally diffrent car now. I can't wait to take it to the track and beat the snout out of it without having to worry about the tranny.

All that's left now is some track tuning, unfortunately that will have to wait till spring. All the tracks are closed up here in the great white north.

Final dyno numbers were 701rwhp 750rwtq.

BTW i went with Jakes Performance for the 4L80e.
