This has been a really nice thread to read, great pics too. I live on the north end of the county, almost made it to Bisbee this past week for jury duty, but the trial was cancelled.
Any activities planned before monsoon season? |

I've been there a number of times when it was Stouts, been inside during the remodel and it looks nice. Hopefully the monsoon will cooperate and we can enjoy a good time together.

Chiricahua National Monument
I was checking out the Chiricahua National Monument. Looks like a fun drive. The 8 mile road is paved up to the top! Been wanting to drive my Camaro up there. Good opportunity for some photos. The road up there is Bonita Canyon Dr. and has three different parking areas.

The Monument is a great, very scenic drive and well worth the effort.
Was there for a photo shoot after I bought the SS; Cochise Head in the background. These pics were taken near Faraway Ranch; Coues deer grazing along the road; There are picnic tables to relax at and short trails to walk on if one wants to see more scenery. One of my favoritist places in the United States and some of the hiking trails are fantastic, but I prefer winter hikes with 60s temps. |

Let's plan a road trip/get together in the coming months after the monsoon are gone and cooler temperatures. This will give us time to properly plan and find a nice place to eat.

Sounds great to me. Has anyone driven US 191 north of Morenci to Alpine, lots of twists and turns on the ascent? Parts of US 180 between Silver City and Alpine are like the back of a spastic snake.

191 out of Safford to 78 to 180 through NM is a nice drive. Only have done it on a bike and my truck, but is should be a blast in the car. We go up there in the winter to go skiing around Springerville.

Last year, 2 of us did the drive from Morenci to Alpine in June and in September, 7 of us did it. You have not lived until you take you Camaro on this road. Over 400 turns in 90 miles. The first time, we only came up on 1 truck and he pulled over as soon as he saw us. NOBODY coming the other way. In Sept., only caome up on 3 trucks ans they pulled over also. Only one on comind car. Had the road all to ourselves both times. It was fantastic. One word of advice. LEAVE BOTH NANNIES ON!!!

It's a beautiful drive, IIRC, there are 3 passes 9,000+ feet. I've done it twice in my Cummins, once towing a 14,500# fifth wheel. On one of the lower switch backs rpm dropped down to about 700rpm in 2nd gear, I did not want to double clutch into granny gear given the trailer weight and engine torque. To my surprise, the low end torque of the Cummins slowly build up and I didn't have to downshift.
I can't wait to drive that twisty road in an SS. There's also a very twisty road that goes from Silver City to the Gila Cliffs National Monument, maybe we could hook up with some of the Las Cruces members. |
