Great write up Darin !!!!!!!!

Besides porting the L99's intake is there an intake out there offered for the L99?

The LS3 has the NEW F.A.S.T Intake what do L99 guys get ?

The L99 and LS3 intakes and cylinder heads are the same with the exception of valve weight and spring pressure.

I cant say that I have ever been impressed with a GM OEM cylinder head but I have to say they did a pretty good job on the L92-L99-LS3 heads as well as the LS7. I just got through porting some heads for my 2010 Camaro SS and then I ported some for a friend " Mike at New Era Performance". I was impressed that the stock head flowed 300cfm with only a 86% intake throat! Then when you open them up to 89 as I did with mine they move really good air. Mikes head I opened them up to 90% and it moves a little more than mine. I did not make the throats any larger for mike and I because the cams are only .585 lift and 230° @ .050. We both have the 6 speed auto with VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and the cam retards and advances up to 10+°. After you put an after market cam, CAI, Headers and ported heads in them these Camaro's pump out almost 500hp (465-470RWH) and run 11.80s. There isn't any room using stock piston for more lift or I would have it. Looking at the flow curve these heads have its obvious they would LOVE more lift!

Generous on valve size and area for sure! It seems that with a long runner they make better broader power with areas like this.

Anyone wanting cylinder head specs just ask. I will get the info for you. I will be pourng the entire induction system to find out what kind of runner volume ratio the OEM engineers are using. It looks pretty generous. Thats probably the reason a fully ported manifold doesn't show any (or very little) power.

Below is a post that Mike at New Era Performance made in another thread regarding these ported heads I did for him. It looks like a good ported set of heads and a port match is worth close to 30HP.

Dyno numbers with New Era VVT cam and ported heads
I just finished up some more mods on my 2010 L99 Camaro SS today, thought you guys might like to see the results.

The bottom graph is what my L99 camaro ss dyno'd stock.

The next one up has the following mods:
-New Era cam package that still uses VVT, and gets rid of AFM
-New Era OTR intake
-American Racing 1 7/8 headers with cats, stock mufflers
-New Era ported throttle body
-160 thermostat
-Ported intake manifold
-Precision 3600 rpm torque converter

The next one up has the following:
-Stock heads milled .025
-Valve job
-Stock heads hand ported by DM

And then the last one:
-Re-port matched the intake manifold to the new ported heads

Click this bar to view the small image.

This package is available by install only, if you are interested, please pm me, or email sales@neweraperformanceparts.com for pricing and availability. If you have an LS3, these mods will make about 60 more rwhp, this is the common difference in power we see here on our dyno between the LS3 and L99.

These heads are a little to large from the factory. I tried to remove only the material needed to increase efficiency and no more.

Darin you have an L99 I got a question quite a few folks with L99's including myself ( New car with 280miles on her ) has a ticking sound at start up !!!!!!! you pop the hood and it comes from both sides of the engine from the Valve cover area. Everyone says its the AFM lifters.

Is this Normal? and Does your car do this or did it do this at one time?

Is there a way to get rid of this? It's not loud just noticable......maybe im just being anal since this is a NEW car and from past cars a tick is something you dont want.

Thanks David

This was a concern of mine as well. I got a stethoscope and listened to the lifters through the valve covers to make sure it was just valve train noise and not a rocker arm fulcrum going bad or god forbid, the lifter itself. Its not a problem, dont worry about it. Many of these new OEM "high performance" push rod engines do this. All the Chrysler Hemi's have this same lifter noise. My Charger RT as well as all the Charger SRT8s have a lifter noise worse than the Camaro's!

5ccis still quite a bit with only ridding the flow blockage. I wonder if all the heads are about the same.
