Excess oil in the PCV system; The Saga Continues

I have a Catch Can installed and it has collected over 40 oz of Oil in 6500 miles (3 oz or so every 500 mi) - I think that indicates a problem. GM, however, does not.

My dealer is agrees with me, but is approaching the issue 'by the book' and does not think they can convince GM to authorize a warranty repair using the catch phrase 'Oil Consumption' - since GM 'allows' 1qt per 2000 miles(?) as within operating parameters.

It is not a normal consumption problem, per se, since liquid oil is freely flowing through the PCV and into the Throttle Body. Imagine all that liquid oil (not oil vapor) coating the inside of the Throttle Body, Intake Manifold, Valves and Valve seats and the tops of the pistons.

I have brought this thread to the attention of my dealer, but GM remains intractable.

Has anyone besides IndeedSS1 (OP for the above thread) been able to convince GM to warranty the Valley Cover / PCV Baffle?

If so, how was your Service Ticket written?

These are 16oz Bottles of oil collected by the Catch Can:

Doesn't look right to me. I have about that many miles on my current oil and the dipstick level hasn't moved.

not the answer you want, but why not fix it yourself? at least then you know it has been fixed.

I may do that once it's out of warranty, but I'd rather have it done under warranty.

The answer for all manufacturers is to have you come in every 15k miles and spend between $140 and $450 for a TB and upper indiction cleaning service so it is steady reacuuring revenue to have the owner pay to clean the deposits and oil instead of fixing the issue.

You can try and cap the valley cover vent and use the rear of the drivers side valve cover (remove the rubber cap from the barb) and it may get better. Try that and if you need more detailed instructions just ask.

Well, The CC is doing it's job . So, other than remembering to dump it every 500 miles...

With that much oil flowing into the CC, should I be concerned that
oil is still flowing into the TB? I have an Elite Engineering CC

From our friends on a Challenger Forum:

Throttle Bodies Show Need for Catch Cans
For those who doubt the necessity for a catch can, here is a comparison between a stock throttle body with and without a catch can. The miles are not exactly the same, but close. We happen to have swapped out stock throttle bodies for BBK ones and found this interesting.

62k vs. 50k miles
No Catch Can vs. Catch Can

Holy cow, the oil caught from mine is about on par with yours. I've had my catch can one for ~250 miles and have caught around 2 oz. of oil. Really makes me nervous the more I read about it.

Looks like the same car, same issue: 2010 2SS/RS LS3

Did you buy the Car new or used?
If used; are you in a postion to take off the TB for inspection (easy job)
and look for oil?

Used, with about 6500 miles on it. Now almost at 7300. I'm confident I could take it off for inspection, I have the mechanical know-how to do it. Wouldn't mind getting a hold of IndeedSS and get the contact info of the mechanic that did his job.

Don't count on help from GM apparently. Dealers response:

" I opened a case with GM today regarding your vehicle. The engineer we spoke to said there was nothing they would let us change or do to the vehicle. It is performing better than any of the vehicles fixed so far. They stated the repairs listed in the bulletin would not improve the vehicles current oil usage. The amounts are all within acceptable levels for the SS. Unfortunately, our hands are tied"

BUT, they may be referring to a TSB about a blocked drain hole in the Rocker Cover. Clarification pending.

Yeah, 6500 miles and you should have a lot of oil in the TB and Manifold
if your problem is the same as mine and you are catching a lot of oil
in your CC. I installed mine at 3300 miles and I'm at 10,000 now.
The photo of the bottles of oil in the first post are from those 6700 miles.

Any ideas who has the best deals on these catch cans at the moment? I figure I'll install one shortly when I do my first oil change and fluid change overs.
