Give me some tips of Drag Racing m6..

So i am only 17 as most know and i have only drag raced about 5 runs in my dads 5th gen. Well i am heading out to a local track with my manager from work who has a 2013 5.0. He is running about 13.0. I would be happy with a 13.5 as a best run. I am on all season so should i do a burnout? miss the water? I understand staging just want some opinions on clutch engagement, shifting points, etc.. When i did my dads SS i did a few clutch jumps just from being nervous.

I always try to avoid the water. And do a lil bit of a burn out in case you might of ran through some. As far as staging I turn the pre-stage bulb on and wait for the other guy, you dont wanna double bulb someone. Meaning turning on both lights before they turn one on. Its the the unwritten rule/courtesy lol. After my prestage light and the other guys prestage light is on I nudge the car forward little by little just turning the stage light on. I rev it up to 2k and give her hell. A4 btw lol

Yea I know about the courtesy rule. I'm alittle nervous about messing my car up though. I mean running your dads car is one thing, running your Daily driver is another.

I just wouldnt be doing any hard launches esp if you have sticky tires and hook good. Maybe rolling into the throttle then giving it hell.

if you are nervous leave traction control on for first couple of runs and shift around 5000. with traction control off if you shift hard at 5000 the rear might break loose in which case get off the gas and roll back into it. in my t/a i could hard shift at 5500 and never had an issue but i had some sticky z rated tires where as you have all seasons that will be more prone to spinning. dont worry about running 13.5, just worry about getting down the track in 1 piece till you get more comfortable with the car. dont pull a Zabo...

LOL. Just make sure your comfortable first couple passes, then you can really starting rowing through the gears

Go around the water and do a quick burn out to clean the tires off.
I get the clutch pedal right before it engages the clutch.
The next few steps are going to depend on a lot of things(track bite, tire grip, amount of slipping the clutch just right, etc)
- bring the rpms to the desired rpm.
- slip the clutch and apply the throttle as needed.(once the clutch is out, you should be at wot.)
You want to get off the line with no wheel spin or bog, but I would rather have a hint of wheel spin. It's going to take practice.

I normally start at 2500 rpms and work my way up.

Practice makes perfect. Let us know how you do. Oh and shift at 6k rpms.

for your first few runs just worry about getting off the line without stalling, that would be way more embarrassing then running 14+. eventually you want to do like ndtguy said but dont rush things. shifting a 6k with out traction control on can leave you spinning the rears and then you end up in a wall. get some experience and build up to that. better to be safe with a high et then to go into a wall real fast...

you do want to try to do a quick burnout to get any crap off your tires and you might want to invest in a second set of rear wheels with some sticky tires on them as all seasons are not going to do well off the line.

Like anything else in life it takes time and practice. Just be smooth in your launch and shifting. Your times will improve over the course of the day.
Once you become consistent we can focus on specifics like how to stage to cut a better light.

Avoid the water with street tires. If you happen to go through, just do a small burnout to dry the tires up.

Like ndtguy said, depending on the track, you'll want to start launching at a lower rpm and work your way up. My last outing I started really low and only made it to 2500. This netted me 2.0 60's on all-seasons. I could have launched higher, but 2500 was the last run I could get in that night. The launch isn't just dumping the clutch; rather, you'll want to slip a little bit. As mention, slight tire spin is better than a bog.

Shift at 6000rpm.
