a custom tune is just that. its customized for you based on the mods and changes you have on your car.
a dyno tune is a custom tune as well with the extra bit that the tuner utilizes a dynomometer to measure the effects of changes to the programming to fine tune the settings. you can do a mail order custom tune that you would inform the tuner of the mods you have and they send you a programmer loaded with a tune based off of those mods.

I don't have many mods on my car now. Would it be worth it to custom tune a near stock car?

a CAI and exhaust upgrade will give you more power, but a tune will maximize the gains from those upgrades. on a near stock car, you wont see enough of a benefit (unless you have an L99 and want to turn off AFM) to bother with a tune right now

L99 or LS3? If it's the LS3, it's probably best to wait til you do some mods. The L99, on the other hand, is begging for a tune right off the showroom floor. Say goodbye to AFM

Tampa Tuning Camaro Corvette GTO GM Trucks performance tuning
Maybe we're talking terminalogy here, but where I draw a Major differance between the tune of my dyno and street tuning are truely custom to your vehicle compared to a mail order tune which with the exception of making corrections to knock retard to the tune, is not custom to me. Its just a mail order tune made to work better in your car. Sure the vehicle will be safe, but have you every wondered with your Air Fuel Ratio was at cruising and wide open throttle?? thats the major differance.
Custom tuning to me is Im plugged into your vehicle with my wideband running your vehicle in open and closed loop for maximum results to dial in your spark and fueling based on wideband results. I like to get my fuelling in line first, then see how much timing the vehicle will tolerate before knock. Mail order tuning, your tuner is just guessing your AFR based upon the vehicle he's cutting and pasting from for a baseline. I sponsor 6 forums covering an array of LSx set ups so my business isnt dependant on mail order tuning, but I have a ton of set ups if guys need then ranging from G6s to GM trucks, but mainly market towards Corvettes, Camaros, and GTOs and word of mouth does the rest. The mail order tunes really take the tuner 15-20 minutes to cut and past tables into your configuration, but Id rather plug in and do it right. www.TampaTuning.com Phil |

What do you suggest I do? Find a local shop to do a custom tune? Dyno tune?
