A hint on taking good Camaro pics: take it from a distance

Lens distortion occurs when you take a picture of something up close and the dimensions of the object becomes distorted. If you take a picture of your wristwatch up close, it will make your watch look 50% larger compared with your wrist.

I find that pics taken of the Camaro up close make the Camaro look ugly because it distorts the shape of it. However, almost every picture I've seen of a Camaro from a distance looks really good. Similarly, seeing a Camaro in the flesh looks much better than a lot of pictures I've seen because your eyes sees the car naturally, and not distorted like up close pictures.

Case in point, compare this:

with this:

In the second picture, we can see the full and undistorted beauty of the Camaro, whereas in the first pic, the Camaro looks kinda ugly. Notice how the back end of the second picture looks elegant, whereas the back end of the first picture looks unbalanced.

Also, if your have a DSLR, get a fixed focal length prime lens. It cuts down lens distortion by quite a bit. I've been using a 35mm Nikkor DX f/1.8 quite a bit recently.

Aggressive angles help a lot also.

but sometimes taking a picture up close with a wide angle lens (zoomed all the way out) can give you quite the dramatic effect. (note: the colors are not caused by the wide angle) Pay attention to the widening of the front end of the car and compression at the edges of the picture

I know exactly what you are getting at, we should make or find a guide to taking good pictures. However keep in mind the second pic is a render and not a picture.

Yep the second pic is not an actual car but a computer rendering (not a photoshop).

I think that depends on what part of the car you are taking a picture of and what angle you are taking it at.
