Pennzoil Ultra Analysis Report

Lots of oil related questions lately so I thought I'd get an analysis and share the results.

I purchased this car new and broke it in in a "spirited" manner to seat the rings but did not abuse it.
Oil fill history is Factory fill to 3,500 mi, Mobil 1 5w-30 to 7,500 miles, and Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30 from 7,500 miles forward.

The results look good to me and I'll continue to use Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30.

Kudos to Cold Air Inductions for the low Silicon value!
Prior to ordering my CAI I phoned Bill and he explained to me the CAI Brand filter was a high quality filter (I did not want to install just any filter and some oiled filters report high silicon in oil analysis reports) and I could feel confident intake air would be properly filtered. Test report shows his filter is getting the job done.

Thanks for the update, I plan on running Pennzoil Ultra in my car once the time comes. Was this the first oil analysis you have done for the car?

So on the notes of the report it said something about "adding a quart of 10W-30". Was that on the oil change, or was that after the oil change? Also, did your LS3 need any additional oil during the test period?

Blackstone asks if you added any oil during the miles you had this sample in the engine. The OP added one quart during the time this oil was in the engine.

Added a quart of Ultra 10w-30 at about 5,000 miles into this oil change cycle. Wasn't able to find 5w-30 at the store the day I went in to buy it.

Have not had a new car in a while, so can you define what you mean by spirited driving during the break in?

Cylinder walls have a cross hatch to help wear rings into the cylinder bore.
The cross section of a piston ring is flat on both vertical sides, flat on the bottom, and slightly diagonal on the top, wide outside touching cylinder wall and narrow inside near piston. This shape allows the air and gas mixture to force the piston rings out against the cylinder wall during the compression stroke forming a better seal. During the break-in period the cross hatch is there to assist wear-in so the ring and cylinder wall wear "into" each other.

My spirited break-in involved heavier than normal throttle position when accelerating from stops (think driving for poor fuel economy) once the engine and drivetrain is at operating temperature. In my area normal temps are achieved after approximately 5 miles of gentile to average driving.

So, for the first 50 miles all driving was gentle - I'm breaking in more than just the engine - typically 2,500 rpm shift points. 4,000 rpm max.
50 - 250 miles saw a few aggressive freeway entrance ramps.
250 - 500 miles had dedicated WOT runs to bring oil and water temps above 200, then cruise (think cool-down lap at the track) then park for lunch or whatever so the engine could cool. My goal was to "heat cycle" the engine several times so the pieces would settle at their ultimate size.
500 - 1000 miles saw 5,000 rpm as the self-imposed limit - with a few WOT runs

Hope the explanation is helpful to you.

My goal was to balance longevity with engine power, this car is a keeper for me!

My "spirited" break-in was a lot more aggressive than as described above.

API Service Classification.
The oil formulation was slightly changed between SM and SN.
Possibly explains the difference
